It depicts a number of key figures from the once secret brotherhood of (Hebr. the Prophets). The painting is a retrospective; by 1900 the group was breaking up as its members matured.

Paul Sérusier
Paul Sérusier (; 9 November 1864 – 7 October 1927) was a French painter who was a pioneer of abstract art and an inspiration for the avant-garde Nabis movement, Synthetism and Cloisonnism. Education Sérusier was born in Paris. He studied at the Académie Julian and was a monitor there in the mid-1880s. In the summer of 1888 he travelled to Pont-Aven and joined the small group of artists centered there around Paul Gauguin. While at the Pont-Aven artist's colony he painted a picture that became known as '' The Talisman'', under the close supervision of Gauguin. The picture was an extreme exercise in Cloisonnism that approximated to pure abstraction. He was a Post-Impressionist painter, a part of the group of painters called Les Nabis. Sérusier, along with Paul Gauguin, named the group. Henri Fantin-Latour
Henri Fantin-Latour (; 14 January 1836 – 25 August 1904) was a French painter and lithographer best known for his flower paintings and group portraits of Parisian artists and writers. Early life Born in Grenoble, Isère, Ignace Henri Jean Théodore Fantin-Latour first had drawing lessons with his father Théodore Fantin-Latour (1805-1875), who was a painter.Poulet & Murphy 1979, p. 73. In 1850 he moved to Paris where he enrolled in the small Paris School of Drawing, where he studied with Louis-Alexandre Péron and Horace Lecoq de Boisbaudran, an innovative and non-traditional instructor who developed his own teaching method based on painting and drawing from memory. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts, in Paris, in 1854, where he had for classmates, Edgar Degas, Alphonse Legros and Jean-Charles Cazin. ''A Studio at Les Batignolles (''French language, French: ''Un Atelier aux Batignolles)'' is an oil-on-canvas painting by French Impressionism, Impressionist painter and lithographer Henri Fantin-Latour, created in 1870. It depicts the Batignolles group, Batignolles Group at the studio of Édouard Manet in the Batignolles Quarter. The painting was exhibited at the Salon (Paris), Salon in Paris in 1870. ''A Studio at Les Batignolles'' is the companion piece to a work created six years earlier by Fantin-Latour, ''Homage to Delacroix'', which was done as a tribute to the Romantic painter who had died a year earlier. The two paintings are meant to represent friendship and partisanship among the painters. In contrast to the earlier work, the leading figure in ''A Studio'' is Édouard Manet.
