The Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst (HGB) or Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig is one of the oldest art schools in Germany, dating back to 1764. The academy has four colleges specializing in fine arts, graphic design, photography and new media art with around 500 students. It is the home of two notable modern art movements, the so-called Leipzig School (painting), Leipzig School and New Leipzig School. History On 6 February 1764, Prince Francis Xavier of Saxony became the founding administrator of a new painting academy, in the name of his nephew, Prince-Elector Frederick Augustus I of Saxony, who was still a minority. Leipzig (, ; ; Upper Saxon: ; ) is the most populous city in the States of Germany, German state of Saxony. The city has a population of 628,718 inhabitants as of 2023. Philippine Wolff-Arndt
Philippine Wolff-Arndt (geb. ''Arndt''; 1849–1940) was a German painter. Despite difficult access to an artistic education, she was active in this profession throughout her life. She was also committed to socially disadvantaged people and campaigned for women's rights, for example as a co-founder of the Leipzig Women Artists' Association. In Leipzig, she also fought for the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig (then the Königliche Akademie für Grafik und Buchkunst) to be the first art academy in Germany to admit women to study. Life Arndt was born in Frankfurt in 1849. She grew up in a financially well-off family. As a pupil at the secondary school, she began taking drawing lessons with the painter Caroline Ziefraß at the age of 15. Thus, she had a female as her drawing teacher. Ursula Arnold
Ursula Arnold (born Ursula Musche 10 March 1929 – died 24 May 2012) was a German photographer. Much of her best known work involves street scenes in Berlin and Leipzig produced during the German Democratic Republic years. Living under a one-party government which valued visual artistry as a device for influence and control over the people, she was described as "one of those artists who could not easily be integrated". Arno Rink
Arno Rink (26 September 1940 – 5 September 2017) was a German painter. He was accepted to the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig (HGB) in 1962 and studied under Werner Tübke, Hans Mayer-Foreyt and Harry Blume. He is associated with the second generation of the Leipzig School (painting), Leipzig School, which paints in a German figurative tradition. Rink started to teach at the HGB in 1979 and was its headmaster from 1987 to 1995. He taught several prominent painters from the New Leipzig School, such as Neo Rauch, Tilo Baumgärtel, Michael Triegel, Tim Eitel, David Schnell and Christoph Ruckhäberle. Werner Tübke
Werner Tübke (30 July 1929 in Schönebeck, Germany – 27 May 2004 in Leipzig, Germany) was a German painter, best known for his monumental Early Bourgeois Revolution in Germany, Peasants' War Panorama located in Bad Frankenhausen. Associated with the Leipzig School (painting), Leipzig School, he is "one of the few East German artists who gained recognition in West Germany." History Tübke was born in 1929 into a merchant family. At the age of 17, Tübke spent 10 months in Soviet occupation zone of Germany, Soviet occupation authorities' prison without charge. He learned the trade of a building painter in Schönebeck (Elbe) and Magdeburg. After completing his high school education late, Tübke studied from 1948 to 1950 at the Higher School of Graphic Arts and Book Design in Leipzig. Bernhard Heisig
Bernhard Heisig (31 March 1925 – 10 June 2011) was a German painter and graphic artist. Long-time director of the Leipzig Academy (Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst; 1961–64, 1976–87) and a leading figure in East Germany's Leipzig School (painting), Leipzig School, which included Wolfgang Mattheuer and Werner Tübke, he painted in the tradition of Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, and Oskar Kokoschka. His experiences from World War II on both the western and eastern fronts were a recurring subject in his art beginning in the late 1960s, and it is for these works that he is best known in the West. Highly regarded on both sides of the Berlin Wall in the 1980s, he was at the center of controversy after German unification when his painting ''Time and Life'' was selected to hang in the German parliament. Wolfgang Mattheuer
Wolfgang Mattheuer (7 April 1927—7 April 2004) was a German painter, graphic artist and sculptor. Together with Werner Tübke and Bernhard Heisig he was a leading representative of the Leipzig School, a figurative art current in East Germany. He came to prominence with allegorical, pessimistic and sometimes heroic paintings which were accused of expressing political dissidence. He was later an open critic of both socialism and capitalism. He taught at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig (HGB) for many years. In 1974 he resigned from his position as professor at the HGB to work as a freelance painter. In 1988 he left the Socialist Unity Party of Germany. Walter Arnold (27 August 1909 – 11 July 1979) was a German stonemason and sculptor. The Academy of Arts () is a state arts institution in Berlin, Germany. The task of the Academy is to promote art, as well as to advise and support the states of Germany. The academy's predecessor organization was founded in 1696 by Elector Frederick III of Brandenburg as the Brandenburg Academy of Arts, an academic institution in which members could meet and discuss and share ideas. The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna () is a public art school in Vienna, Austria. Founded in 1688 as a private academy, it is now a public university. The academy is also known for twice rejecting admission to a young Adolf Hitler in 1907 and 1908.
