Hernando County () is a county located on the west central coast of the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population was 194,515. Its county seat is Brooksville, and its largest community is Spring Hill. Hernando County is included in the Tampa-St. Petersburg- Clearwater, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is also part of the Nature Coast of Florida. As of 2005, Hernando was the 35th fastest-growing county in the country. History In 1767, a group of Upper Creeks from Eufaula, Alabama, migrated to the Tampa Bay region and settled in what is now Hernando County. They would eventually become a part of the Muskogee speaking Seminole. Early European Pioneers and Founding Roughly 100 settlers and over 50 slaves arrived in what would become Hernando County in February 1842. Hernando de Soto (; ; 1497 – 21 May 1542) was a Spanish explorer and conquistador who was involved in expeditions in Nicaragua and the Yucatan Peninsula. He played an important role in Francisco Pizarro's conquest of the Inca Empire in Peru, but is best known for leading the first European expedition deep into the territory of the modern-day United States (through Florida, Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, and most likely Arkansas). Thomas Hart Benton (senator)
Thomas Hart Benton (March 14, 1782April 10, 1858), nicknamed "Old Bullion", was an American politician, attorney, soldier, and longtime United States senator from Missouri. A member of the Democratic Party, he was an architect and champion of westward expansion by the United States, a cause that became known as manifest destiny. Benton served in the Senate from 1821 to 1851, becoming the first member of that body to serve five terms. He was born in North Carolina. After being expelled from the University of North Carolina in 1799 for theft, he established a law practice and plantation near Nashville, Tennessee. He served as an aide to General Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812 and settled in St. Louis, Missouri, after the war. The 3rd Florida Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that fought for the Confederacy in American Civil War. The regiment was formed in the summer of 1861 and served until it surrendered in 1865. Organization The 3rd Florida Infantry was formed near Pensacola, Florida, in July, 1861. Its companies were recruited in the counties of St. Johns, Hernando, Jefferson, Duval, Wakulla, Madison, Columbia, and Suwannee. The 2nd Florida Cavalry Regiment was a Cavalry regiment from Florida that served in the Union Army between December 1863 and November 29, 1865, during the American Civil War. Service Organized at Cedar Key and Key West, Florida between December 1863 and June 1864. During the summer of 1864, while the regiment was stationed at Fort Myers, many refugees in the town enlisted with the unit. A field commander visiting Fort Myers said of the regiment: "Cavalry they were called, and as cavalry they were paid, but they never were mounted."
