Royal Watercolour Society
The Royal Watercolour Society is a British institution of painters working in watercolours. The Society is a centre of excellence for water-based media on paper, which allows for a diverse and interesting range of approaches to the medium of watercolour. Its members, or associates, use the post-nominal initials RWS and ARWS (associate member). They are elected by the membership, with typically half a dozen new associates joining the Society each year. History The society was founded as the ''Society of Painters in Water Colours'' in 1804 by William Frederick Wells. Its original membership was William Sawrey Gilpin, Robert Hills, John Claude Nattes, John Varley, Cornelius Varley, Francis Nicholson, Samuel Shelley, William Henry Pyne and Nicholas Pocock. Fred Appleyard
Fred Appleyard (1874 – 1963) was a British artist known for his landscape paintings, portraits, classical subjects and allegorical compositions. He had 41 works exhibited during his lifetime by the Royal Academy and painted the mural ''Spring Driving Out Winter'' in the Academy Restaurant. Appleyard was born in Middlesbrough, England on 9 September 1874, the son of Isaac Appleyard, an iron merchant. His uncle was the sculptor John Wormald Appleyard. Having received his formal education at Scarborough, North Yorkshire, Scarborough, he attended Yorkshire Coast College, Scarborough School of Art under the genre and landscape painter Albert Strange. It was at the Scarborough School of Art that he met Harry Watson (artist, born 1871), Harry Watson, and the two were to remain lifelong friends.
