Harrogate, South Australia
Harrogate is a small South Australian town, located in the Adelaide Hills on the banks of the Bremer River (South Australia), Bremer River. It was laid out by Charles Burney Young in 1858, and is believed to be named after Harrogate, North Yorkshire, in England by John Baker (Australian politician), John Baker. The town has a number of historic buildings, dating back to the mid-19th century, including a former Bible Christian Church, Bible Christian chapel (c. 1859), and a village hall (now a community hall). A post office also operated in the town between the years 1861 to 1974. Harrogate is approximately 56 km from Adelaide. Electoral District Of Kavel
Kavel, created in 1969 and coming into effect in 1970, is a single-member electoral district for the South Australian House of Assembly. Located to the east of Adelaide, Kavel is based on the town of Mount Barker and includes much of the eastern portion of the Adelaide Hills. The Division of Mayo is an Australian electoral division located to the east and south of Adelaide, South Australia. Created in the state redistribution of 3 September 1984, the division is named after Helen Mayo, a social activist and the first woman elected to an Australian University Council. Woodside is a town in the Adelaide Hills region of South Australia. The town is between Balhannah and Lobethal, from the state capital, Adelaide. Mount Barker is also nearby. Description The town is a useful traffic hub linking Oakbank, Lobethal and Charleston. It is on the Onkaparinga Valley Road, South Australian route B34, and is 25 km due East of Adelaide's CBD. Bremer River (South Australia)
The Bremer River, part of the lower Murray-Darling catchment, is a river that is located in the Adelaide Hills region in the Australian state of South Australia. Course and features The Bremer River rises on the eastern side of the Mount Lofty Ranges at an altitude of south of and flows generally south, joined by the Mount Barker Creek and Dawesley Creek, before emptying into Lake Alexandrina at the lower end of the Murray-Darling basin. The river descends over its course. The largest town in the catchment area is Mount Barker. Other towns include Nairne and Kanmantoo. Towns on the Bremer River itself include Harrogate, Callington and Langhorne Creek, where the floodwaters are used to irrigate the local vineyards. Charles Burney Young
Charles Burney Young (7 July 1824 – 29 September 1904), generally referred to as C. B. Young, was a landholder, winemaker and politician in the early days of the colony of South Australia. History Young was born in England of Scottish ancestry and studied at London University. He married Nora Creina Bacon (11 January 1835 – 5 June 1925) of Swanscombe, Kent in 1851. They left for South Australia on 16 November 1854, in the ''Flora Kerr''. They were hospitably treated by Wilfrid Kent Hughes of "Avenel", Robe Terrace, North Adelaide, where Nora's second child was born, but died in August. They took a cottage in Ward Street, North Adelaide. Harrogate ( ) is a spa town and the administrative centre of the Borough of Harrogate in North Yorkshire, England. John Baker (Australian Politician)
John Baker (28 December 1813 – 19 May 1872) was an early South Australian pastoralist and politician. He was the second Premier of the colony of South Australia, succeeding Boyle Travers Finniss; however, he only held office for 12 days from 21 August to 1 September 1857 before being succeeded by the third Premier of the colony, Robert Torrens. Early life John Baker was born at Ilminster in Somerset, England, on 28 December 1813 to Richard Chaffey Baker and his wife Mary, née Anstice (c. 1885 – 24 August 1849). He emigrated to Van Diemen's Land in 1838, and married Isabella Allan on 7 June 1838.
