Pétur Karl Guðmundsson (born 30 October 1958) is an Icelandic former professional basketball player and coach. Standing , weighing and playing the center (basketball), center position, Pétur was the first Icelander and one of the first European players ever to play in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Often described as the greatest Icelandic basketball player of all time, he was named the Icelandic basketball team of the 20th century, Icelandic Basketball Player of the 20th century by the Icelandic Basketball Association in 2001, and in 2015, he was inducted in to the ÍSÍ Hall of Fame, National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland Hall of Fame. Arinbjörn Guðmundsson (22 May 1932 – 2014) was an Icelandic and Australian chess player. He is a Chess Olympiad individual medalist (1960). Biography Arinbjörn Guðmundsson learned to play chess late, at the age of seventeen. However, he achieved good results in chess tournaments and was one of Icelandic leading chess players from 1955 to 1970. In 1954, together with Friðrik Ólafsson and other Icelandic chess players, Arinbjörn Guðmundsson founded the first chess magazine in the country. Björgólfur Guðmundsson (2 January 1941 – 2 February 2025) was an Icelandic businessman and chairman and owner of West Ham United. Björgólfur was Iceland's second businessman to be worth more than a billion dollars — his son, Björgólfur Thor Björgólfsson being the first. Jón Guðmundsson (1904 – 1980) was an Icelandic chess player, three-times Icelandic Chess Championship winner (1932, 1936, 1937), Chess Olympiad and an individual gold medal winner (1939). Jón lærði Guðmundsson (; 1574–1658) was an Icelandic autodidact, poet, and alleged sorcerer. He is considered a pioneer of Icelandic literary history, because he was the first to write a description of Icelandic nature and a critical account of a contemporary event, in Icelandic. Páll Guðmundsson (; born 1959) is an Icelandic sculptor and artist. Born in Húsafell in the west of Iceland (where he still lives), he has done part of his studies at the University of Fine Arts in Cologne, Germany. Mostly, he sculptures faces of people out of the rock he finds around Húsafell. He has for example sculptured the faces of Johann Sebastian Bach, Björk and the Icelandic writer Thor Vilhjálmsson. Páll is also working as a musician with a unique idiophone, a large xylophone-like instrument made of stones called the '' Steinharpa''. Tómas Guðmundsson (6 January 1901 – 14 November 1983) was an Icelandic writer. He was known as Reykjavík's poet ''(Reykjavíkurskáldið, skáld Reykjavíkur)''. Tómas's parents were Steinunn Þorsteinsdóttir and Guðmundur Ögmundsson, living at Efri-Brú in Grímsnes. He soon got in touch with literature and poetry. He read Icelandic sagas, Jónas Hallgrímsson's poems and more. He also started to write his own poetry at a young age.
