Fan (river)
The Fan is a river in northern Albania. It is formed by the confluence of two source rivers: the Great Fan () and the Lesser Fan (), that join a few kilometers west of the town Rrëshen. The Great Fan rises near the village Kryezi, Qafë-Mali municipal unit, in the Shkodër County. It flows generally southwest through Fushë-Arrëz and Gjegjan. The Lesser Fan rises near the village Thirrë, in the municipal unit Fan, Mirditë municipality, Lezhë County. It flows southwest through Reps ( Orosh) and just north of Rrëshen. West of Rrëshen the two source rivers unite and the Fan continues west to Rubik, and then south until it flows into the river Mat, east of Milot. Rivers Of Albania
Albania has an extensive hydrographic network of 152 rivers and streams, including 10 large rivers flowing from southeast to northwest, mainly discharging towards the Adriatic Sea. Combined, they produce a total annual flow rate of . In the mountainous regions, the rivers meander through narrow valleys with steep banks and great depth, collecting streams and silt during heavy rains. Their beds become erosive, causing frequent changes in their paths. Klos, Mat
Klos ( sq-definite, Klosi) is a town and a municipality in Dibër County, northern center Albania. It was formed at the 2015 local government reform by the merger of the former municipalities Gurrë, Klos, Suç and Xibër, that became municipal units. The seat of the municipality is the town Klos. The total population is 16,618 (2011 census), in a total area of 357.72 km2. The population of the former municipality at the 2011 census was 7,873. Milot, Albania
Milot is a town and a former municipality in the Lezhë County of northwestern Albania. At the 2015 local government reform it became a subdivision of the municipality Kurbin. The population at the 2023 census was 6,193. The municipal unit of Milot is composed of the town of Milot and 14 villages, including Fushë Milot, Mal i Bardhë, Vinjoll, Shkopet, Ferr-Shkopet and Skuraj. The town stands on the southern bank of the Mat River. Nearby is the well-known Zogu Bridge named after the leader Zog I of Albania. Rubik, Albania
Rubik is a town in northern Albania. It lies along national highway SH30. At the 2015 local government reform it became a subdivision of the municipality Mirditë. The population at the 2023 census was 2,550. The municipal unit consists of the town of Rubik at its center and eleven peripheral villages: Fang, Katund i Vjeter, Bulshizë, Rasfik, Fierzë, Munaz, Rreja e Velës, Livadhëza, Vau Shkjezë, Rrethi i Eperm, Bulgër, and Rreja e Zezë. Orosh
Orosh (or ) is a small village in Mirditë within the county of Lezhë in the northwest of the Republic of Albania. Geographically, it is located inside the mountainous region of northern Albania in the Valley of Fan. The seat of the former municipality was the town of Reps. The former Orosh Abbey was located in the municipality. Mirditë
Mirditë ( sq-definite, Mirdita) is a municipality in Lezhë County, northwestern Albania. It was created in 2015 by the merger of the former municipalities Fan, Mirditë, Fan, Kaçinar, Kthellë, Orosh, Rrëshen, Rubik, Albania, Rubik and Selitë, Mirditë, Selitë. The seat of the municipality is the town Rrëshen. The total population is 22,103 (2011 census), in a total area of 870.26 km2. It is coterminous with the former Mirditë District. The municipality is located within the wider region of Mirdita whose territory is synonymous with the historic Tribes of Albania, Albanian tribe of the same name. During the time of Ottoman rule, Mirditë, along with the surrounding tribal regions, obtained a status of autonomy from the Ottomans and managed to preserve their Roman Catholic faith. The Mat ( sq-definite, Mati) is a river in north-central Albania. Its overall length is , while its catchment surface is . Its average discharge is . The main tributary is the Fan, flowing from the northeast, while the Mat flows from the southwest down to the confluence with Fan and then towards the Adriatic Sea. Etymology The Albanian name ''mat'' originally meant "elevated location", "mountain place". Today's meaning in Albanian, "river bank, river shore", is a consequence of a secondary change through the common use of both the terms ''mal'', "mountain" and ''breg'', "shore", giving the meaning of "elevation". The river was recorded by Roman writer Vibius Sequester (4th or 5th century AD) as ''Mathis'', following a hellenized graphic mode of the term ''mat''.
