F50 (catamaran)
The F50 is a one-design foiling catamaran used in the SailGP race series. The name is an abbreviation of "Foiling" and "a hull length of 50 feet". The F50s are adapted from the AC50s used in the America's Cup, with modifications including new control systems and modular wingsails. The F50s are one of the fastest racing classes in history, with a predicted top speed of 52.2 knots (96.6 km/h, 60 mph); the current F50 speed record, achieved by the France SailGP Team at the Range Rover France Sail Grand Prix in 2022, stands at 53.96 knots (99.94 km/h, 62.10 mph). On July 18 2024 Canada SailGP Team achieved a top speed of 55.06 knots (101.98 km/h, 63.37 mph) whilst testing new T-shaped foils, to replace L-shaped foils, in San Francisco. New York Harbor
New York Harbor is a bay that covers all of the Upper Bay. It is at the mouth of the Hudson River near the East River tidal estuary on the East Coast of the United States. 2021–22 SailGP Championship
The 2021–22 SailGP Championship was the second season of the SailGP championship. Originally due to be contested in 2020, the season was postponed to 2021 after the first round in Sydney due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and was then extended into the early months of 2022. The championship was again won by the Australian team. New Zealand was the inaugural winner of the Impact League. Entries Team changes After only one season, China left the championship. Denmark and Spain joined the championship in Sydney, while New Zealand entered in Bermuda. Catamarans
A catamaran () (informally, a "cat") is a watercraft with two parallel hull (watercraft), hulls of equal size. The wide distance between a catamaran's hulls imparts stability through resistance to rolling and overturning; no ballast is required. Catamarans typically have less hull volume, smaller Displacement (ship), displacement, and shallower draft (hull), draft (draught) than monohulls of comparable length. Tom Slingsby
Tom Slingsby (born 5 September 1984) is an Australian competitive sailor. Slingsby's first successes came sailing Laser dinghy, Laser dinghies, where he won three consecutive world championships and the 2012 Olympic gold medal. Slingsby was the strategist for the America's Cup-winning Team Oracle USA in 2013. In 2016 he skippered the winner-of-line honours in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race line. Following this he skippered the Australian team in the inaugural SailGP competition. Rome Kirby
Rome Kirby is an American sailor who has competed in the Volvo Ocean Race and multiple America's Cups. Kirby is a native of Newport, Rhode Island. His father, Jerry Kirby, has sailed in three Volvo Ocean Races and six America's Cups. They are believed to be the first father and son to win the America's Cup. Kirby was an alternate for Puma Racing, supporting '' Il Mostro'' during the 2008–09 Volvo Ocean Race. He then sailed with Puma Racing on '' Mar Mostro'' during the 2011–12 Volvo Ocean Race. He was the youngest sailor in the six-boat fleet. Kirby then joined Oracle Racing and sailed on ''Oracle Team USA 17'' as a trimmer, when it successfully defended the 2013 America's Cup. Cowes () is an England, English port, seaport town and civil parish on the Isle of Wight. Cowes is located on the west bank of the estuary of the River Medina, facing the smaller town of East Cowes on the east bank. One-design racing is a racing method which may be adopted in sports using complex equipment, whereby all vehicles have identical or very similar designs or models, avoiding the need for a Handicapping, handicap system. A daggerboard is a retractable centreboard used by various sailing craft. While other types of centreboard may pivot to retract, a daggerboard slides in a casing. The shape of the daggerboard converts the forward motion into a windward lift, countering the leeward push of the sail.
