Einar Már Sigurðarson
Einar Már Sigurðarson (born 29 October 1951) is an Icelandic politician. He served as a member of the Althing (Iceland's parliament) from 1999 to 2009 for the Social Democratic Alliance, first as an MP for the Eastern constituency (1999–2003) and then for the Northeast constituency (2003–2009). He served as a Deputy Speaker of the Parliament during his last term from 2007 to 2009. Einar Már ran unsuccessfully in the SDA party primary elections in 2009 but lost his seat to former newscaster Sigmundur Ernir Rúnarsson and subsequently lost his seat in the 2009 parliamentary election. After his career in politics, he returned to his profession as an educator, becoming the headmaster of a secondary school in Neskaupstaður Neskaupstaður () is a town located on the fjord Norðfjörður on the eastern side of Iceland. The Alþingi (''general meeting'' in Icelandic, , anglicised as ' or ') is the supreme national parliament of Iceland. It is one of the oldest surviving parliaments in the world. The Althing was founded in 930 at ("thing fields" or "assembly fields"), situated approximately east of what later became the country's capital, Reykjavík. Even after Iceland's union with Norway in 1262, the Althing still held its sessions at until 1800, when it was discontinued. It was restored in 1844 by royal decree and moved to Reykjavík. Eastern (Althing Constituency)
Eastern ( is, Austurland) was one of the multi-member constituencies of the Althing, the national legislature of Iceland. The constituency was established in 1959 following the nationwide extension of proportional representation for elections to the Althing. It was abolished in 2003 when the constituency was merged into the Northeastern and Southern constituencies following the re-organisation of constituencies across Iceland. Northeast ( is, Norðaustur) is one of the six multi-member constituencies of the Althing, the national legislature of Iceland. The constituency was established as Northeastern ( is, Norðurland eystra) in 1959 following the nationwide extension of proportional representation for elections to the Althing. It was renamed Northeast in 2003 when most of the Eastern constituency was merged into the Northeastern constituency following the re-organisation of constituencies across Iceland. Northeast consists of the regions of Eastern and Northeastern. 2009 Icelandic Parliamentary Election
Snap parliamentary elections were held in Iceland on 25 April 2009, following strong pressure from the public as a result of the Icelandic financial crisis. The Social Democratic Alliance and the Left-Green Movement, which formed the outgoing coalition government under Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, both made gains and formed an overall majority of seats in the Althing (Iceland's parliament). The Progressive Party also made gains, and the new Citizens' Movement, formed after the January 2009 protests, gained four seats. Neskaupstaður
Neskaupstaður () is a town located on the fjord Norðfjörður on the eastern side of Iceland. It is part of the municipality of Fjarðabyggð and, as of 2016, it has a population of 1,481. Neskaupstaður is the third largest town in Eastern Region. The town was originally built on a farm called "Nes", settled by Egill rauði ("the red"). The town was nicknamed "Little Moscow" in the 20th century due its strong socialist background. History Until 1949, the town was only accessible by boat.
