Eede
Eede is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located close on the Belgian border about 3 km south of Aardenburg, in the municipality of Sluis. History The village was first mentioned in 1279 "con apelle Ee", and refers to a former river. The river was dammed in 1813, and it silted after the Leopold Canal was built. Shortly after 1651, a church was built, however it was destroyed by the French in 1672. It was sold to the Catholics in 1815. In 1912, the church burnt down. The church was damaged in May 1940, restored and completely destroyed on 12 September 1944. In 1951, the Assumption of Mary Church was built. On 13 March 1945, Wilhelmina of the Netherlands returned to the Netherlands via Eede. The village had been conquered by the Canadians, but was largely in ruins. On 3 March 1954, a monument was revealed to mark the return of the queen. It is a statue of the Dutch Maiden. In 1984, a Canadian monument with armed vehicle were added to the war memorial. Eede ... Sluis (municipality)
Sluis (; zea, label=Zeelandic, Sluus ; french: Écluse) is a town and municipality located in the west of Zeelandic Flanders, in the south-western Dutch province of Zeeland. The current incarnation of the municipality has existed since 1 January 2003. The former municipalities of Oostburg and Sluis-Aardenburg merged on that date. The latter of these two municipalities was formed from a merger between the previous municipality named Sluis and the former municipality of Aardenburg in 1995. History The town received city rights in 1290. In 1340 the Battle of Sluys was fought nearby at sea during the Hundred Years' War. There is a record of one of the first lotteries with money on 9 May 1455 of 1737 florins (US$170,000, in 2014). During the Eighty Years' War in 1587 the town was captured by Spanish troops under the Duke of Parma and was retaken in 1604 by a Dutch and English force under Maurice of Nassau. Aardenburg
Aardenburg is a small city close to the Dutch border with Belgium. It is part of the Sluis Municipality, located in the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands. Its medieval name was Rodenburgh (Red Castle). In the Sint-Baafskerk, (Saint Bavo's Church), Aardenburg houses the most complete example of the ''Scheldegotiek'', the characteristic Gothic architecture of the Scheldt. The Dutch Maiden (Dutch: ''Nederlandse Maagd'') is a national personification of the Netherlands. She is typically depicted wearing a Roman garment and with a lion, the Leo Belgicus, by her side. Leopold Canal (Belgium)
