Evangelos Florakis Naval Base
The Evangelos Florakis Naval Base ( el, Ναυτική Βάση «Ευάγγελος Φλωράκης») is a Cyprus Navy base, situated on the island's southern coast adjacent to the Vasilikos industrial area and power plant, near Zygi, between Limassol and Larnaca. Operations Prior to 11 July 2011, it was the main location of the Command of the Navy Base and one of the five primary commands (also referred to as sub-commands) of the Navy. It was responsible for overseeing all naval shore installations, facilities and associated personnel. The Command's current status is unclear. Expansion As a component of the EU's joint military development program (PESCO), Cyprus designed various upgrades in its defense infrastructure. Florence Parly
Florence Parly (born 8 May 1963) is a French politician who served as Minister of the Armed Forces under President Emmanuel Macron from 2017 to 2022. A former member of the Socialist Party (PS), she previously served as Secretary of State for the Budget from 2000 to 2002 under President Jacques Chirac. Career An alumna of the École nationale d'administration, Parly was appointed Secretary of State for the Budget on 3 January 2000 in the government of Prime Minister Lionel Jospin. In office until 6 May 2002, she seconded Christian Sautter, then Laurent Fabius at the Ministry of Finance. Andreas Ioannides (naval Officer)
Andreas Ioannides (; 1958 – 11 July 2011) was the head of the Cyprus Navy until his death in the Evangelos Florakis Navy Base explosion, which took place at the Evangelos Florakis Navy Base on July 11, 2011. Career A Greek Cypriot, Ioannides was born in Rizokarpaso in 1958, entered the Hellenic Naval Academy in 1977 and graduated in 1981 as an Ensign. Evangelos Florakis ( el, Ευάγγελος Φλωράκης, Tzoumerka 14 February 1943 – Paphos 10 July 2002 ) was a Greek Army officer who rose to the rank of lieutenant general. After retiring from the Hellenic Army, from 2000 until his death in a helicopter accident in 2002 he commanded the Cypriot National Guard. Life Evangelos Florakis was born in Tzoumerka near Arta on 14 February 1943. He entered the Hellenic Army Academy in 1962 and graduated as an Infantry Second Lieutenant four years later, seventh of his class. Trained as a special forces officer, he served as commanding officer of the 31st Infantry Regiment, and served twice in Cyprus, as an officer with ELDYK and later, as a colonel, as deputy chief of staff of the Cypriot National Guard.
