Elena Sánchez Valenzuela
Elena Sánchez Valenzuela (2 March 1900 – 30 September 1950) was a Mexican actress, journalist and creator of the Mexican film archive. One of her country’s first silent film stars, she was also a feminist and suffragette. Biography Valenzuela was born on 2 March 1900 in Mexico City, Mexico to journalist Abraham Sánchez Arce and Juana Valenzuela. She was still a student at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música (Mexico), National Conservatory of Music when she made her film debut in ''Barranca trágica'' (1917). The following year, she was chosen to star in the first film adaptation of Federico Gamboa's 1902 novel, ''Santa (1918 film), Santa'' (1918). The silent film was produced by Germán Camus, directed by Luis G. The Primer Congreso Interamericano de Mujeres (First Inter-American Congress of Women) was a feminist meeting held from 21 to 27 August 1947 in Guatemala City, Guatemala. It was called together by the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and hosted by the Unión Democrática de Mujeres of Guatemala. This organization had been formed by Angelina Acuña de Castañeda, Berta Corleto, Elisa Hall de Asturias, Gloria Menéndez Mina de Padilla, Rosa de Mora, Irene de Peyré, and Graciela Quan immediately following the Guatemalan 1944 coup d'état to push for recognition of women's civil rights.
