Unadilla River
The Unadilla River is a river in the Central New York Region of New York State. The river begins northeast of the hamlet of Millers Mills and flows generally south to the village of Sidney, where it converges with the Susquehanna River, which drains into the Chesapeake Bay, a bay of the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the length of the Unadilla forms the western border of Otsego County and the eastern borders of Chenango and Madison counties, all in New York. This border made up a significant portion of the Fort Stanwix Treaty Line of 1768. It was meant to establish the border for an Indian reserve, beyond which European-American settlers were not supposed to go. Settlers resented British efforts to control their movements, and continued to encroach on Native American territories. South Edmeston, New York
South Edmeston is a hamlet (and census-designated place) on the Unadilla River in the Town of Edmeston in Otsego County, New York, United States. This area had been a center of dairy farming and cheese production since the nineteenth century. Kraft Foods had operated a cheese plant in South Edmeston starting in the year 1920. They originally produced Philadelphia brand cream cheese. Later they switched over to Breyers yogurt, and the plant employed about 55 workers. In December 2004, Kraft announced that the plant would close on April 8, 2005. William Edmeston
General William Edmeston (died 1804) was a British Army officer who owned an estate in New York State. As a captain in the 48th Regiment of Foot, he was posted to North America in 1755 with his brother, Lieutenant Robert Edmeston, to fight in the French and Indian War. In 1763, by Royal decree, royal proclamation, the brothers were each awarded 5,000 acres (20 km2) of land in the colonies for their military service. They attempted to establish their claims in what was then a disputed part of the New Hampshire Grants, now Vermont. Major-General Sir William Johnson, 1st Baronet ( – 11 July 1774), was a British Army officer and colonial administrator from Ireland known for his military and governance work in British colonial America. As a young man, Johnson moved to the Province of New York to manage an estate purchased by his uncle, Royal Navy officer Peter Warren, which was located in territory of the Mohawk, one of the Six Nations of the Iroquois League, or ''Haudenosaunee''. Johnson learned the Mohawk language and Iroquois customs, and was appointed the British agent to the Iroquois.
