Edith Quimby
Edith Smaw Quimby ( Hinkley; July 10, 1891 – October 11, 1982) was an American medical researcher and physicist, best known as one of the founders of nuclear medicine. Her work involved developing diagnostic and therapeutic applications of X-rays. One of her main concerns was protecting both those handling the radioactive material and making sure that those being treated were given the lowest dose necessary. Early life and education She was born on July 10, 1891, in Rockford, Illinois. In 1912, she graduated from Whitman College in Washington with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics. After a brief stint teaching high school in Nyssa, Oregon, she was awarded a 1914 fellowship for her master's degree studies at the University of California which she earned in 1916. Maruja Clavier
María Auxiliadora Clavier (1934 – 2015), also called Maruja Clavier, was one of the first Venezuelan nuclear oncologists. She was a founder of the Dr. Raúl Vera Vera Oncology Unit, at the time a novel setting to provide comprehensive care to cancer patients in the country using nuclear medicine. Biography Maruja Clavier was born in 1934 in the Anzoátegui State located in the northeastern region of Venezuela. She began her baccalaureate education at the Colegio Nuestra Señora de La Consolación in Barcelona, Venezuela and completed it in Goshen, New York. Upon returning to Venezuela, she revalidated her work at the Liceo Fermín Toro. Later she enrolled at the School of Medicine of the University of Los Andes, and then transferred to the School of Medicine of the Central University of Venezuela, where she graduated as a physician in 1960. Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy or radiotherapy (RT, RTx, or XRT) is a therapy, treatment using ionizing radiation, generally provided as part of treatment of cancer, cancer therapy to either kill or control the growth of malignancy, malignant cell (biology), cells. It is normally delivered by a linear particle accelerator. Radiation therapy may be cure, curative in a number of types of cancer if they are localized to one area of the body, and have not metastasis, spread to other parts. It may also be used as part of adjuvant therapy, to prevent tumor recurrence after surgery to remove a primary malignant tumor (for example, early stages of breast cancer). Henry Harrington Janeway
Henry Harrington Janeway (19 March 1873 – 1 February 1921) was an American physician and pioneer of radiation therapy. Publications Janeway's clinical and experimental observations were published in medical journals of his time. His report on ''Radium Therapy in Cancer, at the Memorial Hospital (1915-1916)'', which appeared in book form in 1917 was the most comprehensive work of its type published in the United States. Its first chapter, "Physical Considerations Relative to the Application of Radium", was written by Gioacchino Failla.
