Dramatic Overture (Fernández Blanco)
The ''Dramatic Overture'' by Evaristo Fernández Blanco is a tone poem written in 1940. Subtitled ''Musical setting for a civic social war drama'', it was conceived as a homage to the Republican effort in the Spanish Civil War after the war ended with the victory of the National faction and the establishment of a repressive dictatorship, and marked the composer's creative retirement for four decades. It was written in Viascón, a hamlet in Pontevedra where Fernández Blanco, a Republican cultural officer during the war, hid from reprisals. The work consists of three episodes titled ''Desolation'', ''Action'' and ''Hommage to the heroes'', respectively a gloomy introduction, a frantic ostinato march and a glorifying hymn including quotations from The Internationale and Whirlwinds of Danger. Evaristo Fernández Blanco
Evaristo Fernández Blanco (Astorga, Spain, Astorga, 6 March 1902 – Madrid, 22 October 1993) was a Spanish composer. He was a member of the Generation of '27, associated to the Group of Eight (music), Group of Eight. Fernández Blanco studied in Madrid under Conrado del Campo and in Vienna under Franz Schreker. Returning to Madrid in 1935, he aligned with the Republican faction (Spanish Civil War), Republican faction and was named a representative of the government's Music Council. After the Republican defeat in 1939 he sought refuge from the White Terror (Spain), White Terror in Viascón, a hamlet in Pontevedra where he composed his Dramatic Overture (Fernández Blanco), Dramatic Overture. In 1941 he moved to Barcelona, where he worked as a pianist in local zarzuela companies. Soon he stopped composing. Whirlwinds of Danger (original Polish title: Warszawianka) is a Polish socialist revolutionary song written some time between 1879 and 1883. The Polish title, a deliberate reference to the earlier song by the same title, could be translated as either The Varsovian, The Song of Warsaw (as in the Leon Lishner version) or "the lady of Warsaw". To distinguish between the two, it is often called "Warszawianka 1905 roku" ("Warszawianka of 1905"), after the song became the anthem of worker protests during the Revolution in the Kingdom of Poland (1905–1907), when 30 workers were shot during the May Day demonstrations in Warsaw in 1905. Enrique García Asensio (born 22 August 1937 in Valencia (city in Spain), Valencia, Spain) is a Spanish violinist, composer and conducting, conductor.
