The Doğançay Museum (), Turkey’s first modern art museum, is dedicated to the artistic legacy of Burhan Doğançay. History The museum officially opened its doors to the public in 2004. It is housed in a historic 150-year-old five-story building - once an elegant home to a Greek family - located in the heart of bustling Beyoğlu district of Istanbul. Just like a vast number of other important landmark buildings in Beyoglu, the museum was originally in a state of complete disrepair when Burhan Doğançay purchased it in 1999. From the very beginning, however, Dogancay envisaged that this architecturally inviting building would become his museum. Following a major four-year renovation, it was restored to its former glory and its interior converted to meet exacting museum standards. Burhan Doğançay
Burhan C. Doğançay (11 September 1929 – 16 January 2013) was a Turkish-American artist. Doğançay is best known for tracking walls in various cities across the world for half a century, integrating them in his artistic work. Biography Born in Istanbul, Turkey, Burhan Dogançay obtained his artistic training from his father Adil Doğançay, and Arif Kaptan, both well-known Turkish painters. In his youth, Dogançay played on the Gençlerbirliği football (soccer) team. In 1950, he received a law degree from the University of Ankara. While enrolled at the University of Paris between 1950 and 1955, from where he obtained a doctorate degree in economics, he attended art courses at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Burhan Doğançay Series
This is a list of creative periods (series) by Burhan Doğançay (11 September 1929 – 16 January 2013), a Turkish-American artist, who became famous for translating realistic objects such as billboards, posters, graffiti and other street art into seemingly abstract compositions. Considered the most influential Turkish-born artist of the post war-era, Dogancay's oeuvre is categorized into fourteen distinct series in which he predominantly used collage and fumage. While Dogançay spent most of his artistic career in New York City he always remained closely connected to his native Turkey.
