Divided Cities
A divided city is one which, as a consequence of political changes or border shifts, currently constitutes (or once constituted) two separate entities, or an urban area with a border running through it. Listed below are the localities and the state they belonged to at the time of division. Nicosia
Nicosia, also known as Lefkosia and Lefkoşa, is the capital and largest city of Cyprus. It is the southeasternmost of all EU member states' capital cities. Nicosia has been continuously inhabited for over 5,500 years and has been the capital of Cyprus since the 10th century. It is the last divided capital in Europe; three years after Cyprus gained independence from British rule in 1960, the Bloody Christmas conflict between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots triggered intercommunal violence, and Nicosia's Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities segregated into its south and north respectively in 1964. Buenos Aires Province
Buenos Aires, officially the Buenos Aires Province, is the largest and most populous Provinces of Argentina, Argentine province. It takes its name from the city of Buenos Aires, the capital of the country, which used to be part of the province and the province's capital until it was Federalization of Buenos Aires, federalized in 1880. Since then, in spite of bearing the same name, the province does not include Buenos Aires city, though it does include all other parts of the Greater Buenos Aires metropolitan area. Dominion Land Survey
The Dominion Land Survey (DLS; ) is the method used to divide most of Western Canada into one-square-mile (2.6 km2) sections for agricultural and other purposes. It is based on the layout of the Public Land Survey System used in the United States, but has several differences. The DLS is the dominant surveying, survey method in the Canadian Prairies, Prairie provinces, and it is also used in British Columbia along the Railway Belt (British Columbia), Railway Belt (near the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway), and in the Peace River Block in the northeast of the province. Although British Columbia entered Canadian Confederation, Confederation with control over its own lands (unlike the Northwest Territories and the Prairie provinces), British Columbia transferred these lands to the federal Government as a condition of the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway. 110th Meridian West
The meridian 110° west of Greenwich is a line of longitude that extends from the North Pole across the Arctic Ocean, North America, the Pacific Ocean, the Southern Ocean, and Antarctica to the South Pole. The 110th meridian west forms a great circle with the 70th meridian east. In Canada, the meridian forms the boundary between Nunavut and the Northwest Territories north of the parallel 70° north. Originally 110°W was intended as the Fourth Meridian for the Dominion Land Survey, but because of the imperfect surveying methods of the time, the meridian was placed a few hundred metres west of this longitude. The Fourth Meridian has been the entire boundary between Alberta and Saskatchewan since 1905. Northwest Territories
The Northwest Territories is a federal Provinces and territories of Canada, territory of Canada. At a land area of approximately and a 2021 census population of 41,070, it is the second-largest and the most populous of Provinces and territories of Canada#Territories, the three territories in Northern Canada. Lloydminster is a city in Canada which has the unusual geographic distinction of straddling the provincial border between Alberta and Saskatchewan. The city is incorporated by both provinces as a single city with a single municipal administration. Located in the heart of Treaty 6, Lloydminster is the traditional homeland of the Plains Cree, Wood Cree, Dene, Saulteaux and homeland of the Métis.
