Daibyonin
, also known as ''The Last Dance'' and more rarely ''The Seriously Ill'', is a 1993 Japanese film directed by Juzo Itami about the final year of a successful film director suffering from cancer. The film can be seen as a criticism of the traditional attitudes of Japanese doctors to their patients, especially the withholding of information from patients with terminal illnesses, which Itami saw as "a violation of human rights". It also touches on other end-of-life issues for the terminally ill, and how Japanese society deals with both life and death. Juzo Itami
, born , was a Japanese actor, screenwriter and film director. He directed eleven films (one short and ten features), all of which he wrote himself. He is the namesake of the Juzo Itami Award, founded in 2009 to honor his legacy. Early life Itami was born Yoshihiro Ikeuchi in Kyoto. The name Itami was passed on from his father, Mansaku Itami, a renowned satirist and film director before World War II. In his childhood, he went by the name Takehiko Ikeuchi (池内 岳彦). At the end of the war, in Kyoto, Itami was chosen as a prodigy and educated in a ("special scientific education class"), where he began to be trained as a future scientist who was expected to defeat the Allied powers. Rentarō Mikuni
was a Japanese actor, writer and director, who starred in films of Keisuke Kinoshita, Mikio Naruse, Tadashi Imai, Shōhei Imamura, Tomu Uchida and many others. He received numerous prizes for his performances and was awarded the Jury Prize at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival for his film '' Shinran: Path to Purity'', which he wrote and directed. Early years Mikuni's parents met in October 1922 at the port of Numazu. His mother had been a maid in Kure, but had been laid off and was on her way home. , born Masahiko Katō (加藤 雅彦 ''Katō Masahiko''; January 2, 1940 – August 4, 2018) was a Japanese actor and director. Career Tsugawa was born January 2, 1940, in Kyoto, Japan. Toshiyuki Honda
is a Japanese jazz musician and composer. Honda's father was a jazz critic, whose name was also Toshiyuki Honda. As a jazz musician, he learned flute and saxophone, and worked in the late 1970s with George Otsuka and the Burning Waves ensemble. In the 1980s he worked with Chick Corea, Tatsuya Takahashi, and Kazumi Watanabe, as well as leading his own ensemble, Super Quartet. He was also a member of the ensemble Native Son. Starting in the late 1980s, Honda turned increasingly toward composing for film and television, as well as working in record producing.
