Mikuni died in Tokyo on 14 April 2013 of acute heart failure[ at the age of 90.] As per Mikuni's wishes, the funeral was held in secret with only relatives and related persons.[ Mikuni wished to have his ashes scattered after his death, but his son, Koichi Sato, placed them in the Sato family grave, which had existed for a long time at a temple in Matsuzaki, Shizuoka.][ This was Sato's wish, as he had not been able to live with his father for a long time before his death.]
