The Conejos River is a tributary of the Rio Grande, approximately long,U.S. Geological Survey. It drains a scenic area of the eastern San Juan Mountains west of the San Luis Valley. Description It rises from snowmelt along the continental divide west of Conejos Peak in western Conejos County, approximately northeast of Pagosa Springs. It flows briefly northeast, through Platoro Reservoir, then southeast through the Rio Grande National Forest, then east along the New Mexico border through a scenic canyon. It enters the southwestern corner of the San Luis Valley from the west near Conejos and joins the Rio Grande from the west approximately 15 mi (24 km) southeast of Alamosa. Antonito, Colorado
Antonito is a List of municipalities in Colorado#Statutory town, Statutory Town located in Conejos County, Colorado, Conejos County, Colorado, United States. The town population was 647 at the 2020 United States Census. History Antonito began life as a sheep herding camp known as San Antonio Junction, referring to its proximity to the Conejos River, Conejos and San Antonio rivers. When the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad built its line south from Alamosa, the town was renamed Antonito and became an important town on the railroad line. The town was incorporated in 1889. There are currently no major industries located in Antonito, but the historic Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad has one terminus in Antonito and the other in Chama, New Mexico. The C&TS also has maintenance facilities and rail yard in the town. The area's economy has recently experienced an upsurge with the passage of Colorado's recreational marijuana laws. Lafayette Head
Lafayette Head (April 9, 1825 – March 8, 1897) was the first Lieutenant Governor of Colorado, serving from 1876 to 1879 under Governor John Long Routt. Early life and family Lafayette Head was born at Head's Fort, Howard County, Missouri. His grandfather, William Head, was a Revolutionary War veteran and a pioneer settler of central Missouri, arriving about 1811. Lafayette's parents, Alfred R. Head and Margaret Heard, also had daughters Eliza Jane (born 1821; married Nathan Hall Downing) and Barthena (born 1827; married John Thomas Gray). Alfred Head died in 1830. In 1841 Margaret Head married John Arnold, widower of one of Alfred Head's sisters. The following year they had a son, Jesse Arnold. Head was also a holder of Native American child slaves.
