Yoenis Céspedes Milanés (born October 18, 1985), nicknamed "La Potencia" (The Power), is a Cuban-born former professional baseball outfielder. He made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut on March 28, 2012, for the Oakland Athletics, and has also played in MLB for the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and New York Mets. Eleno De Céspedes
Eleno de Céspedes, also known as Elena de Céspedes (c. 1545 – ''died after'' 1588), was an Afro-Spanish surgeon and soldier. While Céspedes was assumed to be a girl at birth and was initially married to a man, Céspedes later adopted a male identity and served as a soldier during the second Rebellion of the Alpujarras, eventually becoming a surgeon in peace time and marrying a woman. Céspedes' sex was subject to dispute as a possibly intersex individual, leading to a trial by the Spanish Inquisition on charges of sodomy, witchcraft, transvestism, and bigamy. Céspedes was acquitted of the more serious charges but was sentenced to a ten years of confinement for bigamy, which was commuted to service in a public hospital in acknowledgement of the value of Céspedes' medical skills. Carlos Manuel de Céspedes del Castillo (18 April 1819, Bayamo, Spanish Cuba – 27 February 1874, San Lorenzo, Spanish Cuba) was a Cuban revolutionary hero and First President of Cuba in Arms in 1868. Cespedes, who was a plantation owner in Cuba, freed his slaves and made the declaration of Cuban independence in 1868 which started the Ten Years' War (1868–1878). This was the first of three wars of independence, the third of which, the Cuban War of Independence led to the end of Spanish rule in 1898 and Cuba's independence in 1902. Carlos Manuel de Céspedes y Quesada (August 12, 1871 – March 28, 1939) was a Cuban writer, politician, diplomat, and President of Cuba. Early life and career He was the son of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes and Ana Maria de Quesada y Loynaz. He was a twin with his sister Gloria Dolores. He was also a distant cousin of Perucho Figueredo. In 1915, he married Laura Bertini y Alessandri, an Italian, first in Rome and then later again at City Hall in New York City by Mayor John Purroy Mitchel. They had one child together, the daughter Alba de Céspedes. He was educated first in New York City until 1885, when his mother took him and his twin sister to Germany. Gregorio Céspedes (or Gregorio de Céspedes), SJ (1551–1611) was a Spanish Jesuit priest who went to Korea to do missionary work. Biography He was born in the Toledo municipality of Villanueva de Alcardete. He studied canon law in Salamanca, where he entered the Society of Jesus in January 1569. After his novitiate, the visitor Alessandro Valignano called him to join a group of missionaries who would leave for the East in March 1574, where he would spend the next 34 years of his life.
