A county highway (also county road or county route; usually abbreviated CH or CR) is a road in the United States and in the Canadian province of Ontario that is designated and/or maintained by the County (United States), county highway department. Route numbering can be determined by each county alone, by mutual agreement among counties, or by a statewide pattern. Any county-maintained road, whether or not it is given a signed number, can be called a county road. Depending on the state or province and county, these roads can be named after geographic features, communities, or people. Lenox is a town in Madison County, New York, United States. The population was 8,768 as of the 2020 census. The town is on the county's northern border and is west of the city of Oneida. The International Boxing Hall of Fame is in the town. History The first settlement began ''circa'' 1792. The town was formed in 1809 from the town of Sullivan. Some novels of Walter D. Edmonds characterize life in the area at the time of the Erie Canal construction. The village of New Lenox, Illinois, is named in honor of Lenox. New York State Route 316 (NY 316) is a state highway in Madison County, New York, in the United States. It extends for in a northwest–southeast direction from an intersection with NY 46 in the city of Oneida to a junction with NY 31 in the hamlet of Oneida Valley, located in the town of Lenox. NY 316 serves as a connector between Oneida Lake and the city of Oneida, and it parallels Oneida Creek for its entire length. The route was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York, following what had previously been part of NY 31 during the 1920s. Wampsville is a village within the town of Lenox in Madison County, New York, United States. It is the county seat of Madison County. The population was 573 as of the 2020 census. History The village was founded by Johann Myndert Wemple (1766–1837) and was formerly called "Wempsville". Wampsville was chosen as the seat of Madison County because neighboring Oneida, to the east, and Canastota to the west both wanted the distinction and could not reach a resolution. Cazenovia is an incorporated town in Madison County, New York, United States. The population was 6,740 at the time of the 2020 census. The town is named after Theophile Cazenove, the 'Agent General of the Holland Land Company. The village of Cazenovia is located in the center of the town. The town is on the county's western border. The village of Cazenovia was home to Cazenovia College, a small liberal arts college, from 1824 to 2023. History The town of Cazenovia was established in 1793 from the towns of Whitestown and Paris (both in Oneida County) before the creation of Madison County.
