Clarke County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 9,748. The county seat is Osceola. The county was formed in January 1846, one of twelve counties established by legislative action in a comprehensive act. It was named for James Clarke, a Governor of the Iowa Territory. History The first courthouse for Clarke County was a wood frame two–story structure in Osceola. In 1883 it was replaced with a brick structure on former park area in the town square. By the 1950s this building was insufficient, and the present modern structure was completed in 1956. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018. Iowa Highway 152 (Iowa 152) was a very short route which connected Interstate 35 in Iowa, Interstate 35 (I-35) and U.S. Route 69 in Iowa, U.S. Route 69 (US 69) near Osceola, Iowa. Through Iowa, I-35 and US 69 are mostly parallel routes; Iowa 152 connected the two routes at the narrowest location between them. The route was formed in 1980 from a portion of Clarke County Road R35 and did not undergo any changes in alignment while it was designated. The highway was relinquished to Clarke County and the City of Osceola in 2014. Clarke County Courthouse (Iowa)
The Clarke County Courthouse is located in Osceola, Iowa, United States. It is the third building used for court functions and county administration in Clarke County. History On August 8, 1851, three commissioners choose the site that would become Osceola as the county seat. They purchased the land from George W. How for $100. The first courthouse was a two-story frame building that occupied a corner lot. It was built for $1,600. It had to be abandoned in 1883 because the toll that wind and weather had taken on the structure. It was replaced by a 2½-story brick structure in 1892 that was built on the public square, which up to that point had been a park. The Romanesque Revival building featured a tall clock tower.
