Clark Air Base
Clark Air Base is a Philippine Air Force base in Luzon, located west of Angeles City, and about northwest of Metro Manila. It was previously operated by the U.S. Air Force and, before that, the U.S. Army, from 1903 to 1991. The base covered with a military reservation extending north that covered another . The base was a stronghold of combined Philippine and American forces during the final months of World War II, and a backbone of logistical support during the Vietnam War until 1975. The attack on Clark Field (; Kapampangan: ''Lusuban king Kampo ning Clark'') was part of a series of morning airstrikes on United States Pacific island military bases opening Japanese participation in World War II. The attack was intended to minimize interference from the Far East Air Force (FEAF) during the subsequent invasion of the Philippines by the Empire of Japan. Capture of the Philippines was essential to control shipping routes between Japan and the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. Fort Stotsenburg, during the World War II era, was the location of the Philippine Department's 26th Cavalry Regiment (PS), 86th Field Artillery Battalion, and 88th Field Artillery Regiment; along with the Philippine Division's 23rd and 24th Field Artillery Regiments. Also based here were the 12th Ordnance Company and a platoon of the 12th Quartermaster Regiment. Fort Stotsenburg is situated in Sapang Bato, Angeles City and is approximately 80 km north of Manila. Harold Melville Clark
Harold Melville Clark (October 4, 1890 – May 2, 1919) was a major in U.S. Army Signal Corps. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Clark lived in Manila, Philippines, from 1904 when his father moved there for business until 1910 when he graduated high school. Clark was commissioned a second lieutenant of Cavalry in 1913. In 1916, he transferred to the Aviation Section of the Signal Corps (the Signal Corps was the first to act on a strategic vision for aviation services in the United States Armed Forces, funding the research of the Wright Brothers in 1903), and in 1917 was rated a Junior Military Aviator. Clark flew assignments in Columbus, New Mexico; Kelly Field, Texas; and Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He went to Hawaii in 1917 to command an air service station and completed the first inter-island flight ever made in the Hawaiian Islands.
