Cashel, Ontario
Cashel, Ontario is a small hamlet situated in Unionville, Ontario located at the intersection of Elgin Mills Road and York Regional Road 67. Originally it was called ''Crosby Corners'' after John Crosby (born 1797), the village's first store owner, who came originally from New York State. The name was changed to Cashel in 1851 with the opening of its first post office (located at southwest corner of Major Mackenzie and McCowan Road - now farmland). It was likely named after Cashel in Ireland. In 1851 the community had a sawmill, cobbler shop, blacksmith shop, wagon shop, inn and tavern, Masonic Lodge, and Presbyterian church. In 1890 Peaches United Church was built on land from farmer Thomas Peach at 10762 McCowan Road. The church is a historic site and not operating since the 1960s to 1970s, but cemetery remains in active use. Mount Joy, Ontario
Mount Joy is a community located in the north part of Markham, Ontario, Canada near Highway 48 and 16th Avenue and part of the former Township of Markham. Mount Joy became a police village in 1907, but absorbed into Markham Village in 1915. A non-farm settlement developed on Main Street North and Peter Street from Beech Street to 16th Avenue. Like Quantztown, the former farm land in the area has given way to new homes. Only a handful of homes on Peter Street, former George Rodd General Store / Mount Joy Post Office and the old Mount Joy Public School (built 1907 and closed 1969) are left of the former police village. Rouge Park
Rouge National Urban Park is a national urban park in Ontario, Canada. The park is centred around the Rouge River and its tributaries in the Greater Toronto Area. The southern portion of the park is situated around the mouth of river in Toronto, and extends northwards into Markham, Pickering, Uxbridge, and Whitchurch-Stouffville. Since 2011, Parks Canada has been working to nationalize and nearly double the size of the original Rouge Park. Parks Canada is planning to add more trails, education and orientation centres and improved signage and interpretive panels and displays throughout the park. Parks Canada introduced new educational programs to the park, including Learn-to-Camp, Learn-to-Hike, fire side chats, and other complimentary programming. Dickson Hill, Ontario
Dickson Hill is a small community in northeast Markham, Ontario, Canada, located near Highway 48 and 19th Avenue, on the border to Whitchurch-Stouffville. Unlike other parts of Markham, the area around Dickson Hill has remained largely agricultural. The hamlet has a small church and a school. The original school house, built in 1861, has been relocated to Black Creek Pioneer Village in north-west Toronto. Transportation The Toronto/Markham Airport is located just south of Dickson Hill. The Stouffville-Union Station GO Transit bus route connects Dickson Hill with Markham, Stouffville, and Toronto. There is a proposed development of an international airport immediately south-east of Whitchurch-Stouffville (the Pickering Airport lands). Uxbridge is a township in the Regional Municipality of Durham in south-central Ontario, Canada. Communities The main centre in the township is the namesake community of Uxbridge. Victoria Square, Ontario
Victoria Square is an unincorporated community in Markham, Ontario, Canada. The community was formed in the early nineteenth century. History Historic Victoria Square began at 4th Line (Victoria Square Boulevard) and 18th Line (Elgin Mills Road) in 1805 with mostly Mennonites from Pennsylvania beginning in 1803 and then by British and American settlers in the 1820s. The area was initially called Heise Hill for the Heise family whom were part of the first wave of settlers. The first church ( Primitive Methodist) was built in 1830s on the east side of 4th Line, where the cemetery is still located. The Wesleyan Methodists built a wood-frame church south of the Victoria Square corner in 1845. This was replaced by a red brick edifice in 1880 at what was once William Frisby's old blacksmith shop. Angus Glen ''(Census Tract No. 5350403.05)'' ( 2006 Population 2,596) is a community in the city of Markham, just north of the community and former municipality of Unionville, Ontario, Canada. The area was originally farmland, but as Unionville's housing development in the late 1990s matured in 1997 the original Angus Glen East Village, comprising approximately 500 single family homes and townhouses, was developed. Quantztown, Ontario
Quantztown is an unincorporated community located in the city of Markham, Ontario, Canada, near McCowan Road and 16th Avenue. It is named for German settler Melchior Quantz (1751-1827), who arrived in 1794 after serving with the British Army. Development As early as the 1990s, the area was still at the edge of residential development, with land north of 16th Avenue still agricultural. Since the late 1990s, however, the land has given way to single family homes. Home development began in the early 1980s along Longwater Chase in Unionville's Bridle Trail, and completed in the early 2000s along the west side of Manhattan Drive. Since Markham has been quickly growing, there often is confusion as to where Quantztown really is. Stouffville () is the primary urban area within the town of Whitchurch-Stouffville in York Region, Ontario, Canada. It is situated within the Greater Toronto Area and the inner ring of the Golden Horseshoe. Markham Fair
Markham Fair is one of Canada's oldest country fairs, an annual event established in 1844 and hosted by the Markham, Ontario and East York agricultural society. With over 700 volunteers working on more than 70 committees, Markham Fair is the largest community-based volunteer organization in Canada. The fair and fairgrounds are owned by the Markham and East York Agricultural Society. The fair occurs annually on the weekend before Canadian Thanksgiving, and hosts upwards of 80,000 attendees. Approximately 3,000 exhibitors enter more than 12,000 items, which are judged and put on display during the fair.
