Randolph Robert Carlyle (born April 19, 1956) is a Canadian professional ice hockey coach and former player. He is the former head coach of the National Hockey League (NHL)'s Toronto Maple Leafs and the Anaheim Ducks. He won the Stanley Cup in 2007 with the Ducks during his first stint with the team. As a player, Carlyle dressed for over 1,000 games between the Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins and Winnipeg Jets, winning the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the NHL's best defenceman in the 1980–81 season and serving as a captain of both the Penguins and Jets. Carlyle is partially of Finnish descent, and was raised in Azilda, just northwest of Sudbury, Ontario. Boone Carlyle is a fictional character who was played by Ian Somerhalder on the ABC drama television series '' Lost'', which chronicles the lives of the survivors of a plane crash in the south Pacific. Walter Carlyle (23 May 1938, in Grangemouth – 2007) was a Scottish footballer who played as a right winger. Carlyle began his career in the late 1950s with Rangers but left without playing a first team match and moved to Junior side Shettleston. In 1960, Carlyle moved back to the senior game's top level with newly promoted Dundee United, netting 39 goals in 78 league appearances during his time at Tannadice. In 1964, Carlyle moved to Motherwell, where he stayed for around a year, before playing for St Johnstone and then the Queen of the South side of Allan Ball, Iain McChesney and Billy Collings. Thomas Carlyle (lawyer)
Thomas Carlyle (17 July 1803 – 28 January 1855) was born in King's Grange near Dumfries in Scotland. He studied and graduated in law from the University of Edinburgh. In 1824, he was registered as lawyer at the Scottish bar. In October 1824, he inherited the title Baron Carlyle of Torthorwald. From 1830 on, he came in contact with the Scottish minister Edward Irving who was in process of forming the Catholic Apostolic Church and was named an "apostle” on 1 May 1835. He was given responsibility for the work of that group in Northern Germany. In the 1830s, "Thomas Carlyle, advocate" is listed as living at 62 Cumberland Street in Edinburgh's New Town. He is not to be confused with his better-known cousin the man of letters Thomas Carlyle, born a few years earlier also in Dumfriesshire. Thomas Carlyle (4 December 17955 February 1881) was a Scottish essayist, historian, and philosopher. Known as the "Sage writing, sage of Chelsea, London, Chelsea", his writings strongly influenced the intellectual and artistic culture of the Victorian era. Carlyle was born in Ecclefechan, a village in Dumfriesshire. He attended the University of Edinburgh where he excelled in mathematics and invented the Carlyle circle. After finishing the arts course, he prepared to become a minister in the Burgher (Church history), Burgher Church while working as a schoolmaster. He quit these and several other endeavours before settling on literature, writing for the ''Edinburgh Encyclopædia'' and working as a translator. Steve Carlyle (born March 10, 1950, in Lacombe, Alberta) is a former professional ice hockey defenceman and current coach. He was selected in the third round of the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft, 31st overall, by the Montreal Canadiens. , but never played in the NHL. Carlyle joined the Alberta Oilers for the inaugural 1972–73 WHA season, staying with the renamed Edmonton Oilers until the 1975–76 WHA season. Before being drafted, Carlyle played for the Edmonton Movers and Red Deer Rustlers of the AJHL and for the University of Alberta. Carlyle played for the Canadian National Team between 1970 and 1972. He made his WHA debut after being named Edmonton Athlete of the Year in 1972. Roy Edward Carlyle (December 10, 1900 – November 22, 1956) was an American outfielder in Major League Baseball who played between and for the Washington Senators (1925), Boston Red Sox (1925–26) and New York Yankees (1926). Carlyle batted left-handed and threw right-handed. He was born in Buford, Georgia. In a two-season career, Carlyle was a .312 hitter (157-for-504) with nine home runs and 76 RBI in 174 games, including 61 runs, 31 doubles, six triples, and one stolen base. He hit for the cycle on July 21, 1925, while with the Red Sox. Roy's younger brother, Cleo Carlyle, was also an outfielder. He played for the Red Sox in , the year after Roy left the team.
