The property overlooked the valley and this gave Mrs Murray the idea 'Canyan' or 'Canyon' being the name for a steep sided gully. Population At the , it had a population of 398. The Southern Highlands, also locally referred to as the Highlands, is a geographical region and district in New South Wales, Australia and is 110 km south-west of Sydney. The entire region is under the local government area of the Wingecarribee Shire. The region is also considered a wine region. Sutton Forest, New South Wales
Sutton Forest is a small village in the Southern Highlands, New South Wales, Australia in Wingecarribee Shire. It is located 5 km southwest of Moss Vale on the Illawarra Highway. Sutton Forest was originally granted, then owned by Navy Chief officer, Captain John Nicholson who recently immigrated from Scotland to Australia. This privately owned estate was originally 700 acres, this is where John Nicholson lived and died. Sutton Forest is located in an agrarian setting and is surrounded by farms, vineyards and is home to manor homes and estates. It is in one of the oldest areas settled by Europeans in Australia after Sydney and is somewhat reminiscent of an English village due to the temperate Southern Highlands climate and high rainfall. Belanglo is a locality around the Belanglo State Forest in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia, in Wingecarribee Shire. History The infamous Backpacker murders occurred in the Belanglo State Forest in between the years of 1989–1993. The 7 victims were brutally murdered by the criminal Ivan Milat, who was serving 7 life sentences in Goulburn Correctional Centre with a non-parole period up until his death from cancer in 2019. Ivan continued to claim his innocence against the killings of these several backpackers. Milat's great nephew, Matthew Milat was sentenced to 43 years in prison for murdering Bargo teenager David Auchterlonie in the Belanglo State Forest in 2010. Joadja, New South Wales
Joadja () is a historic town, now in ruins, in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia, in Wingecarribee Shire. The remnants of the town were added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 5 November 1999. It was a thriving mining town between 1870–1911. It was home for approximately 1,200 people, many of whom were skilled immigrants from Scotland. After managing for ten years using bullock teams for transport, a railway was allowed and was connected to the nearby town of Mittagong by a narrow gauge railway that terminated adjacent to the main Southern Railway line in Mittagong. The town existed to mine oil shale from which kerosene was extracted by the Australian Kerosene Oil and Mineral Co. The process was superseded by conventional kerosene production from oil and the oil shale mining became uneconomical. By 1911, the town had become deserted as inhabitants relocated in search of work.
