CKWS-DT (channel 11) is a television station in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, part of the Global Television Network. Owned and operated by network parent Corus Entertainment, the station maintains studios on Queen Street in downtown Kingston, and its transmitter is located near Highway 95 on Wolfe Island, south of the city. History CKWS signed-on December 18, 1954, as an affiliate of the CBC network. It was originally a joint venture between Roy Thomson and the Davies family, owners of ''The Kingston Whig-Standard'' (the source of its callsign). The station has been sold three times: to the Kanatec Corporation, bought by Power Corporation in 1977 and to Corus in 1999. CKWS-FM (104.3 MHz) is a Canadian radio station in Kingston, Ontario. The station airs a hot adult contemporary format branded on-air as ''104.3 Fresh Radio''. The station is owned by Corus Entertainment, which also owns CFMK-FM and CKWS-DT. History The station was launched in 1942 as CKWS, a CBC radio affiliate taking over CBC responsibilities from Queen's University radio station CFRC. When CKLC launched in 1953, it became affiliated with the CBC's second network, the Dominion Network, while CKWS remained with the main CBC network, the Trans-Canada Network (later CBC Radio). Broadcasting on 960 AM, CKWS was owned by Allied Broadcasting, a partnership of Roy Thomson and Rupert Davies, owner of the ''Kingston Whig-Standard'' newspaper. CIII-DT (channel 41) is a television station in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, serving as the flagship station of the Global Television Network. Owned and operated by network parent Corus Entertainment, CIII-DT maintains studios at 81 Barber Greene Road (near Leslie Street) in the Don Mills district of Toronto, and its transmitter is located atop the CN Tower in downtown Toronto. ''Harrigan'' was a Television in Canada, Canadian children's television series in the 1970s and 1980s. The show starred Barry Dale as Harrigan, a leprechaun. ''Harrigan'' was produced by Kingston, Ontario television station CKWS-DT, CKWS-TV, and aired across Canada in television syndication, syndication. Part of the Harrigan (song), theme song included the words: "H - A - double R - I - G - A - N ... it's Harr-i-gan!" Portions of the half-hour program would involve the title character viewing hand drawn pictures submitted by his loyal fan-base of children by looking into his magical pot of gold. His co-star for these segments was Dale's daughter, Deb-Lyn. Miss Sunflower, who delivered the mail while riding a unicycle, was played by Dale's wife, Jo-Anna. Owned and operated by network parent Corus Entertainment, the station maintains studios on Monaghan Road (near Rose Avenue) in the southern portion of Peterborough, and its transmitter is located on Television Hill, just outside the city.
