CFBR-FM is a Canadian radio station, broadcasting an active rock format at 100.3 FM in Edmonton, Alberta. The station uses its on-air brand name ''100.3 The Bear'' and is owned by Bell Media. History The station was launched in 1951 by Sunwapta Broadcasting as CFRN-FM, simulcasting the AM programming of CFRN. It launched separate programming in 1964, and adopted the callsign CKXM in 1979. The station was sold to CAP Communications in 1988 and adopted the callsign CJKE the following year. The station was acquired by Standard Broadcasting in 1992, and adopted the current CFBR callsign, rock format and "Bear" branding in September of that year. CFBR-FM is rebroadcast in Jasper on 92.3 CJAG-FM. On September 28, 2007, the CRTC approved the sale of CFBR and all Standard Radio assets to Astral Media. It is owned and operated by network parent Bell Media alongside cable-exclusive CTV 2 Alberta. Jasper is a specialized municipality and townsite in western Alberta within the Canadian Rockies. The townsite is in the Athabasca River valley and is the commercial centre of Jasper National Park. Astral Media Inc. was a Canadian media conglomerate. It was Canada's largest radio broadcaster, with 84 radio stations in eight provinces. Astral was also a major player in premium and specialty television in Canada, with 23 specialty channels and two conventional stations. In addition, Astral had a presence in out-of-home advertising. In March 2012, Bell Media announced its intent to acquire Astral for $3.38 billion. Although an attempt to purchase the entirety of the company was blocked under competition law, the CRTC approved a revised offer on June 27, 2013, which saw various Astral specialty channels and radio stations divested to competitors. Established on May 11, 1944 as a division of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters, Numeris is the sole provider of viewership numbers for television and radio broadcasters in Canada.
