CBC Bank Building, Berrima
CBC Bank Building is a heritage-listed bank building at 12 Jellore Street, Berrima, Wingecarribee Shire, New South Wales, Australia. It is also known as The First Bank and The Barn Gallery. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History The land consisting of numbers 10, 12 and 14 Jellore Street was purchased by John Keighran of Campelltown in 1834 and 1835. Under the terms of the sale a house was to be erected within 2 years of the 1834 sale. The house would have been completed by 1836 as ownership of the land remained with members of Keighran's family until 1882. It is often described as having been a bakery before its use as a bank, and was possibly the bakery of Dalley and Allen. The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney were the first bank in Berrima, operating a local branch from 1866 to 1894. Berrima () is a historic village in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia, in Wingecarribee Shire. The village, once a major town, is located on the Old Hume Highway between Sydney and Canberra. It was previously known officially as the Town of Berrima. It is close to the three major towns of the Southern Highlands: Mittagong, Bowral and Moss Vale. Etymology The name ''Berrima'' is believed to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning either "southward" or "black swan". History The area around Berrima was once occupied by the Dharawal Aborigines. The region and Wingecarribee River was first visited by Europeans during the late 1790s, including a 1798 expedition led by an ex-convict, John Wilson. Wingecarribee Shire is the local government area of the Southern Highlands in the state of New South Wales, Australia. The Wingecarribee Shire is around southwest of the Sydney central business district and is part of regional Capital Country and to some extent can be considered part of the Southern Tablelands. The New South Wales State Heritage Register, also known as NSW State Heritage Register, is a heritage list of places in the state of New South Wales, Australia, that are protected by New South Wales legislation, generally covered by the Heritage Act 1977 and its 2010 amendments. The register is administered by the Heritage Council of NSW via Heritage NSW, a division of the Government of New South Wales Department of Planning and Environment. The register was created in 1999 and includes items protected by heritage schedules that relate to the State, and to regional and to local environmental plans. As a result, the register contains over 20,000 statutory-listed items in either public or private ownership of historical, cultural, and architectural value. The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Limited, also known as the CBC, or CBC Bank, was a bank based in Sydney, Australia. It was established in 1834, and in 1982 merged with the National Bank of Australasia to form National Australia Bank. History On 8 September 1834 the ''Sydney Herald'' carried a notice titled "The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney" proposing the establishment of a new bank. It began operations on 1 November 1834 and in 1848 was incorporated by an Act of the New South Wales Parliament. Sir Edward Knox was the first bank manager and later a director. Thomas Barker, a manufacturer, engineer, politician, landowner and philanthropist, was a notable director and chairman. The ''Southern Highland News'' is a newspaper published in Bowral, New South Wales, Australia since 1958. It has incorporated a number of other newspapers including ''The Southern Mail'', ''The Robertson Mail'', ''The Moss Vale Mail'', ''The Mittagong Mail'' and ''The Mittagong Star''. History ''The Mittagong Mail'' was first published in 1885 by Daniel Beer. In 1886, Beer sold the newspaper to J. C. Murphy who changed the newspaper's name to ''The Southern Mail''. Murphy began to publish ''The Robertson Advocate'' in 1887, ''The Moss Vale Record'' in 1888, and ''The Mittagong Express'' in 1891.
