Beijing Olympic Village
The Beijing Olympic Village () is a complex of high-rise apartments in Beijing, China, which were opened to the public on July 27, 2008 and closed on August 27, 2008, in conjunction with the 2008 Summer Olympics. As an Olympic Village, it hosted the competitors and their coaches during the event. The village is located on of land which connects with the Olympic Forest and Stadium. It is also connected to two media villages which can host up to 7,000 media personnel. The village was designed to accommodate over 16,000 athletes while providing ample space for both the athletes' social and athletic needs. Of the $42 billion Beijing spent on hosting the 2008 Summer Olympics, $1.827 billion went to the Olympic Village. Safety was of extreme importance to athletes as well as their home countries. The 2008 Summer Olympics (), officially the Games of the XXIX Olympiad () and also known as Beijing 2008 (), were an international multisport event held from 8 to 24 August 2008, in Beijing, China. A total of 10,942 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) competed in 28 sports and 302 events, one event more than those scheduled for the 2004 Summer Olympics. Olympic Village
An Olympic Village is an accommodation center built for the Olympic Games, usually within an Olympic Park or elsewhere in a host city. Olympic Villages are built to house all participating athletes, as well as officials and athletic trainers. After the Munich Massacre at the 1972 Olympics, the Villages have been made extremely secure. Only athletes, trainers and officials are allowed to room at the Village, though family members and former Olympic athletes are allowed inside with proper checks. Press and media are also barred. History The idea of the Olympic Village comes from Pierre de Coubertin. Up until the 1924 Summer Olympic Games, National Olympic Committees rented locations around the host city to house participants, which was expensive. The Olympic Green () is an Olympic Park in Chaoyang District, Beijing, China constructed for the 2008 Summer Olympics. Since then, the streets around the park have been used for an exhibition street race of the FIA GT1 World Championship in 2011, after a race at Goldenport Park Circuit in the vicinity. It again served as an Olympic Park when Beijing hosted the 2022 Winter Olympics. For the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, a total of thirty-seven venues were used. Events took place at eleven pre-existing venues, twelve new venues constructed for the Olympics, and eight temporary venues that were removed following the games. In addition, six venues outside Beijing hosted events, two of which were newly built for the Olympics. Beijing won its bid to host the 2008 Olympics on 13 July 2001. The first new venues to begin construction were the Beijing National Stadium, Beijing National Aquatics Center, Beijing Shooting Range Hall, and the Laoshan Velodrome, where major work commenced in December 2003. The then Beijing Olympic Games Bidding Committee unveiled the venue layout plan for the 2022 Winter Olympics on 20 February 2014:the plan was include the five ice events at the Olympic Green, the Capital Indoor Stadium and the Wukesong Sports Center, which were some of the main venues of the 2008 Summer Olympics. Competitions for luge, bobsleigh and alpine skiing were held at the Xiaohaituo Mountain Area,in a northwest of Beijing (in the West Dazhuangke village, of Zhangshanying in Yanqing District), away from the city centre of Beijing and away from the town of Yanqing.
