Burlington–Harmony Hill Roads Historic District
The Burlington–Harmony Hill Roads Historic District encompasses a historic rural agricultural crossroads village in eastern Harwinton, Connecticut. Stretching mainly along Harmony Hill Road north of its junction with Burlington Road, it includes residential buildings dating from the mid-18th to late 19th centuries. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Description and history The town of Harwinton was established in 1737 from land formerly part of Hartford and Windsor. Burlington Road, now Connecticut Route 4, was then as now the main road between Farmington and Litchfield. The junction with Harmony Hill Road and Locust Road, east of the village center, formed as a small community center known as Catlin's Corners, named for Abraham Catlin, the first settler to the area who also operated a small shop. Harwinton ( ) is a New England town, town in Litchfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 5,484 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. The town is part of the Northwest Hills Planning Region, Connecticut, Northwest Hills Planning Region. The town is served by Regional School District 10. History Prior to settlement by colonists, Harwinton sat at the confluence of various tribal territories, notably that of the Tunxis tribe. The Connecticut Colony granted and split the area of modern-day Harwinton to the townships of Hartford, Connecticut, Hartford and Windsor, Connecticut, Windsor in May 1729. The area was first settled in January 1730 by Daniel Messenger. Townships were formally established in the following years in the Hartford and Windsor allotments. Route 4 is an east–west primary state highway connecting rural Litchfield County to the Greater Hartford area of the U.S. state of Connecticut. It runs from the town of Sharon to the town of West Hartford. Route description Route 4 begins at the junction of Route 41 and Route 343 in Sharon as a rural, minor arterial road. In Cornwall, it briefly overlaps with US 7 to cross the Housatonic River on the Cornwall Bridge. Farther east in Cornwall, it intersects with Routes 125, 43, and 128 before crossing into Goshen.
