Bundesstraße 4
The Bundesstraße 4 (abbr. B4) is a German federal highway running in a northwesterly to southly direction from the state of Schleswig-Holstein to Bavaria. It provides a direct route for motorists traveling between Hamburg and Nuremberg. The section north of Hamburg is paralleled by Bundesautobahn 7 and the road is down-graded to a ''Landstraße'' (country road); the section between Hallstadt and Erlangen is paralleled by the A 70 and A 73 and is also down-graded to a ''Staatsstraße'' (state road, same as country road). The Bundesstraße 4 is the former Reichsstraße 4 (imperial road), on which north of Quickborn the last Commanding Admiral of the Kriegsmarine Friedeburg met with officers of the 2nd British Army to negotiate a truce with the Western Allied forces on May 4, 1945. Wernigerode
Wernigerode () is a town in the district of Harz, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Until 2007, it was the capital of the district of Wernigerode. Its population was 35,041 in 2012. Wernigerode is located southwest of Halberstadt, and is picturesquely situated on the Holtemme river, on the northern slopes of the Harz Mountains. Wernigerode is located on the German Timber-Frame Road. Harzquerbahn
The Harz Railway or Trans-Harz Railway (german: Harzquerbahn) was formerly the main line of the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways (''Harzer Schmalspurbahnen'' or ''HSB'') and runs north to south right across the Harz Mountains from Wernigerode to Nordhausen. However, the tourist attraction of the Brocken, the highest mountain in the Harz, is so great that the Brocken Railway is effectively the main line today. The Trans-Harz Railway joins up with the Selke Valley Railway to Quedlinburg at Eisfelder Talmühle where all trains are organised to make good connections. Heudeber-Danstedt–Bad Harzburg/Vienenburg Railway
The present-day Heudeber-Danstedt–Vienenburg railway is a 32 kilometre long main line, that serves the northern edge of the Harz Mountains in central Germany. Its main role is the handling of tourist traffic in the Harz and the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways there, but it is also worked by goods trains to and from the rolling mills in Ilsenburg. The line originally ran from Ilsenburg further south towards Bad Harzburg. This section was cut, however, by the division of Germany in 1945. In 1996 a new section of line was built from Ilsenburg towards Vienenburg, that used parts of the previously closed Halberstadt–Vienenburg railway. At the same time the railway was upgraded to handle speeds of up to 120 km/h. The line has since acted as a direct link between Halberstadt and Vienenburg. Brunswick–Uelzen Railway
The Brunswick–Uelzen railway line is a largely, single-tracked, non-electrified branch line in the north German state of Lower Saxony. It serves the northern part of Brunswick Land and the eastern region of the Lüneburg Heath. The most important station en route is Gifhorn. The line has also been called the ''Mühlenbahn'' ("Mill Railway") for several years due to the many mills along its route. Course The line runs from Braunschweig Hauptbahnhof to the north, bridges the Mittelland Canal and crosses the Hanover–Wolfsburg line (part of the Hanover–Berlin high-speed railway), in Gifhorn (old station name: ''Isenbüttel-Gifhorn''). Elbingerode (Harz)
Elbingerode is an ''Ortsteil'' of Oberharz am Brocken in the Harz district, in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. The former town was incorporated into the newly established municipality on 1 January 2010. Geography It is situated in the eastern Harz mountain range, approximately south of neighbouring Wernigerode. The former municipal area comprised Elbingerode proper as well as the villages of Königshütte and Rübeland. The surrounding mountains were the site of numerous ore mines and ironworks, today the Drei Kronen & Ehrt mine and the Büchenberg Pit, run as show mines, are popular tourist destinations. Cargo train service to several surrounding limestone pits is provided on the standard gauge Rübeland Railway link to Blankenburg, opened in 1886; the former continuation to Drei Annen Hohne station and the Harz Railway line was closed in 1965.
