Bergmann Mars
The Bergmann Mars was Theodor Bergmann's first successful military pistol design. The pistol used a locked breech design based on a contemporary machine gun design also made by Bergmann. It was chambered for the proprietary 9mm Bergmann cartridge. Background Theodor Bergmann designed a number of pistols during the 1890s, and the first gun designer to make a successful blowback pistol, but his true dream was to obtain a military contract and so he decided to use a locked breech design for machine guns that he patented in 1901 and adapted it for a pistol design, that he marketed towards potential military customers as the Mars pistol. A semi-automatic pistol (also called a self-loading pistol, autopistol, or autoloading pistol) is a repeating firearm, repeating handgun that automatically ejects and loads cartridge (firearms), cartridges in its chamber (firearms), chamber after every shot fired, but only one round of ammunition is fired each time the Trigger (firearms), trigger is pulled. Bergmann MG 15nA Machine Gun
The Bergmann MG 15nA was a World War I light machine gun produced by Germany starting in 1915. It used 100- and 200-round belts and utilized a bipod, which allowed the weapon to be mounted on a flat surface for more accurate firing. Design and development The Bergmann gun used a lock system patented by Theodor Bergmann in 1901 along with the short recoil principle of operation. The locking system, in which a cam moves a lock vertically in the weapon, was not dissimilar to the Browning machine gun designs. The original design, borrowing from the 1910 pattern, was a heavy ground-based weapon fitted with a water-cooling jacket. The weapon was then lightened for both infantry and aircraft use. Locked Breech
Locked breech is the design of a breech-reloading firearm's action. This is important in understanding how a self-reloading firearm works. In the simplest terms, the locked breech is one way to slow down the opening of the breech of a self-reloading firearm when fired. The source of power for the movement is recoil. The principle of firing a projectile from a firearm is that when the propellant in a bullet's casing is ignited, the propellant burns quickly for a very short time. This creates a high-pressure pocket of gas that expands, pushing the projectile (bullet) out of the chamber and down the barrel of the firearm. If the high-pressure gas were not confined within certain parts of the weapon, it could damage the firearm or injure the shooter.
