Bergen auf Rügen () is a railway station in the town of Bergen auf Rügen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. The station lies on the Stralsund-Sassnitz railway and Bergen auf Rügen–Lauterbach Mole railway and was opened in 1883. The train services are operated by DB Fernverkehr, Deutsche Bahn Fernverkehr, ODEG, Ostdeutsche Eisenbahn GmbH, Pressnitztalbahn and Hanseatische Eisenbahn. The narrow gauge Bergen auf Rügen–Altenkirchen railway, line to Altenkirchen was closed in 1970. Bergen auf Rügen is the capital of the former district of Rügen in the middle of the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. Since 1 January 2005, Bergen has moreover been the administrative seat of the '' Amt'' of Bergen auf Rügen, which with a population of over 23,000 is Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's most populous ''Amt''. Geography Location Bergen is in the middle of Germany's biggest island, Rügen, on the Baltic Sea coast. The town lies in a hilly area, with the Rugard woods on the town's northeast outskirts reaching a height of 91 m above sea level. The area around Bergen is predominantly agricultural. The town itself is built on a glacial moraine deposited when the ice sheets retreated during the last ice age. Eberswalde Hauptbahnhof is historically the most important and now the only remaining station in the city of Eberswalde in the German state of Brandenburg. It was opened in the summer of 1842 outside the then city limits on the Berlin–Szczecin railway. The city fathers of Eberswalde did not want a modern railway in their city, so the station was built three kilometres west of the city centre in a wooded area where the Westend district is today. Essen Hauptbahnhof (German for "Essen main station") is a railway station in the city of Essen in western Germany. It is situated south of the old town centre, next to the A 40 motorway. Dortmund Hauptbahnhof is the main railway station in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The station's origins lie in a joint station of the Köln-Mindener Eisenbahn and Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn which was built north of the city centre in 1847.
