Barca d'Alva is a Portuguese village located in the municipality of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, north of the Guarda District. Barca d'Alva is also located inside the Douro International Natural Park and less than 1 km away from the Portugal-Spain border, defined by the Douro and the Águeda (river), Águeda rivers. As far as agriculture is concerned, the most important crops are olive groves, vineyards and almond groves. Douro Line
The Douro line (Portuguese: Linha do Douro) is a 99-mile (160 km) railway line in northern Portugal that runs from Ermesinde to the eastern terminus at Pocinho. The line runs close to the Douro, Douro River for much of its route, offering scenic views of the river and valley. Passenger trains are operated by Comboios de Portugal (CP) and run between São Bento railway station, Porto São Bento and Pocinho railway station, Pocinho, taking 3 hours and 20 minutes. Freight trains operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company, Medway also run on the line. The history of rail transport in Portugal dates from 28 October 1856, when Portugal's first railway line was opened between Lisbon and Carregado: the ''Companhia dos Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses''. The network was gradually expanded both south of the Tagus and to the north of the country, as well as in the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto and to Spain. In 1887 the Douro railway line was completed; also in 1887 the ''Sud Express'' from Lisbon to France operated for the first time. In 1892 a law was passed creating the Board of Directors of the ''CF Estado'' (State Railways), but most railways remain in private ownership albeit with greater state regulation and requirement for co-operation. Barca d'Alva railway station was the terminal station of the Douro Line, until its closure in 1988. The station used to serve Barca d'Alva and acted as a border station between Portugal and Spain, via the Barca d'Alva–La Fuente de San Esteban railway. The Coa halt (name Portuguese Language Orthographic Agreement of 1990, previously spelled as Côa, changed after the halt's closure), is a closed interface of the Douro line, which used to serve the town of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, in the Guarda District, in Portugal.
