Avalanche Express
''Avalanche Express'' is a 1979 adventure thriller film starring Lee Marvin, Robert Shaw, Maximilian Schell and Linda Evans, and produced and directed by Mark Robson. The plot is about the struggle over a defecting Soviet general. The screenplay by Abraham Polonsky was based on a 1977 novel by Colin Forbes. It was the last film for Shaw and Robson, who both died during production in 1978. Synopsis Soviet General Marenkov (Robert Shaw) decides to defect to the West. He is in charge of Operation Winter Harvest, a plot to poison crops in the West. CIA agent Harry Wargrave (Lee Marvin) leads the extraction team. Marenkov meets the team in Milan at La Scala where a rehearsal of '' Nabucco'' is underway. Wargrave's team hustles Marenkov onto the ''Atlantic Express'' train to travel across Europe. Mark Robson (4 December 1913 – 20 June 1978) was a Canadian-American film director, producer, and editor. Robson began his 45-year career in Hollywood as a film editor. He later began working as a director and producer. He directed 34 films during his career, including ''Champion'' (1949), ''Bright Victory'' (1951), ''The Bridges at Toko-Ri'' (1954), '' Peyton Place'' (1957), '' The Inn of the Sixth Happiness'' (1958), '' Von Ryan's Express'' (1965), '' Valley of the Dolls'' (1967), and ''Earthquake'' (1974). Cayetano Neven du Mont (; born 20 May 1947), known professionally as Sky du Mont (, ), is a German-Argentine actor. Vladek Sheybal (born Władysław Rudolf Zbigniew Sheybal; 12 March 1923 – 16 October 1992) was a Polish character actor, singer and director of both television and stage productions. Cyril Leonard Shaps (13 October 1923 – 1 January 2003) was an English actor of radio, television and film, with a career spanning over seven decades. Early radio Shaps was born in the East End of London to Polish-Jewish parents; his father was a tailor. Shaps was a child broadcaster at the London School of Broadcasting, providing voices for radio commercials from the age of 12. He was educated at Central Foundation Boys' School, then took an office job with the London Ambulance Service. David Alexander Hess (September 19, 1936 – October 7, 2011) was an American actor, singer, songwriter, and director. He came to prominence for his portrayals of murderous rapists, villains and gruff characters in several films in the 1970s and 1980s.
