Australian Weather Radars
The majority of Australia's weather radars are operated by the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), an executive agency of the Australian Government. The radar network is continually being upgraded with new technology such as Weather radar#Velocity, doppler and Weather radar#Polarization, dual polarisation to provide better now-casting. Weather radar, Doppler weather radars are able to detect the movement of precipitation, making it very useful in detecting damaging winds associated with precipitation, and determining if a thunderstorm has a mesocyclones, rotating updraft, a key indicator of the presence of the most dangerous type of thunderstorm, a supercell. NEXRAD or Nexrad (Next-Generation Radar) is a network of 159 high-resolution S-band pulse-Doppler radar, Doppler weather radars operated by the National Weather Service (NWS), an agency of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) within the United States Department of Commerce, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) within the United States Department of Transportation, Department of Transportation, and the United States Air Force, U.S. Air Force within the United States Department of Defense, Department of Defense. RV Investigator
RV ''Investigator'' is an Australian marine research vessel which was designed by RALion (joint venture between Robert Allan Ltd. and Alion Science and Technology). WSR-74
WSR-74 radars were Weather Surveillance Radars designed in 1974 for the National Weather Service. They were added to the existing network of the WSR-57 model to improve forecasts and severe weather warnings. Some have been sold to other countries like Australia, Greece, and Pakistan. Radar properties There are two types in the WSR-74 series, which are almost identical except for operating frequency. The WSR-74C (used for local warnings) operates in the C band (IEEE), C band, and the WSR-74S (used in the national network) operates in the S band (like the WSR-57 and the current WSR-88D).
