Austonio is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Houston County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 37 in 2000. History The community, originally named Pearville, was established before 1900. In 1930, the community sponsored a contest, asking participants to select a new name for the community. Ruth Tucker submitted the name "Austonio", a portmanteau of Austin, Texas, Austin and San Antonio; the name was chosen as the community's new name. A post office was established in 1932 and remained in operation until 1971. The community thrived before World War II hit and reached its population zenith of 150 in 1940, with four stores. It began its decline five years later. Most of its businesses closed in the late 1980s. Austonio has an estimated population of 37 in 1990 and 2000. Mapleton, Texas
Mapleton is an unincorporated community in Houston County, Texas, United States. As of 2000, its population was 32, according to the Handbook of Texas. History ''Circa'' 1924, T. J. Maples and his family founded Mapleton. Because there were so many tree stumps left over after the Maples family cleared the area, the community was once called Stumpville. Stumpville had a chapel, a few shops, and numerous dwellings by the middle of the 1930s. The Maples built a sign identifying the town as Mapleton in 1950. Early in the 1990s, Mapleton was a dispersed rural community with a few shops. Thirty-two people were recorded as living there in 2000. The small town was damaged by an EF2 tornado on March 21, 2022. Ash, Texas
Ash is an unincorporated community in Houston County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 19 in 2000. History James B. Ash, a prominent local figure, was honored when Ash was founded in 1870. In 1890, a post office was established there, and by 1896, the settlement included a gristmill-gin and general store. The village had a chapel, two stores, and a handful of dwellings in the middle of the 1930s despite the post office closing in 1909; 10 people were thought to have lived there in 1936. The shops shuttered after World War II, and by the early 1970s, only a church and a few dispersed dwellings remained. Ash was a dispersed rural village in the early 1990s, for which there were no demographic estimates. However, just 19 people were living there in 2000. Lovelady is a town in Houston County, Texas, United States. The population was 570 at the 2020 census. History Lovelady was founded by investors of the Houston & Great Northern Railroad as a railway line was built through a land grant of Cyrus Lovelady, near the communities of Nevil's Prairie, Pennington, and Weldon. The U.S. Post Office opened on November 8, 1872. The town soon had livery, stables, blacksmith shop, and hotels, prospering as both a marketplace and a shipping point. Crockett is a city and the county seat of Houston County, Texas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 6,332. Houston County is the oldest county and Crockett the fifth-oldest city in Texas. History The town was named after Davy Crockett, who had camped nearby on his way to the Alamo; the site was very near the Old San Antonio Road. Andrew Edwards Gossett, a Texas Revolution soldier from Maury, Tennessee, along with his father and brother, donated the land for the town in 1836, and named it after Crockett, whom they had previously known. Texas State Highway 21
State Highway 21 (SH 21) runs from the Texas-Louisiana boundary east of San Augustine to San Marcos in east and central Texas. SH 21 mostly follows the alignment of the Old San Antonio Road and the El Camino Real, except for the portion between Midway and Bryan, where the Old San Antonio Road took a more northerly route, and SH 21 follows a more direct route.
