Mapleton, Texas
Mapleton is an unincorporated community in Houston County, Texas, United States. As of 2000, its population was 32, according to the Handbook of Texas. History ''Circa'' 1924, T. J. Maples and his family founded Mapleton. Because there were so many tree stumps left over after the Maples family cleared the area, the community was once called Stumpville. Stumpville had a chapel, a few shops, and numerous dwellings by the middle of the 1930s. The Maples built a sign identifying the town as Mapleton in 1950. Early in the 1990s, Mapleton was a dispersed rural community with a few shops. Thirty-two people were recorded as living there in 2000. The small town was damaged by an EF2 tornado on March 21, 2022. Houston County, Texas
Houston County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 22,066. Its county seat is Crockett. Houston County was one of 46 entirely dry counties in the state of Texas, until voters in a November 2007 special election legalized the sale of alcohol in the county. Houston County was the first new county created under the 9-year Republic of Texas on June 12, 1837. The original boundaries of Houston County also included all of present-day Anderson and Trinity Counties, and portions of present-day Henderson and Polk Counties. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. It is a type of gazetteer. The ''Handbook of Texas'' is a comprehensive encyclopedia of Texas geography, history, and historical persons published by the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA). Tornado Outbreak Of March 21–23, 2022
A large tornado outbreak struck the Southern region of the United States on March 21–22, 2022, before transitioning to the Eastern United States on March 23. The outbreak started with numerous supercell thunderstorms and severe squall lines developing in central Texas and southern Oklahoma, prompting the issuance of numerous tornado warnings, including multiple PDS tornado warnings. An EF3 tornado caused considerable damage in Jacksboro, Texas while an EF2 tornado from the same storm caused a fatality in Sherwood Shores. Other strong tornadoes caused damage near College Station and in the Austin and Houston metropolitan areas.
