Attunga, New South Wales
Attunga is a small farming community in the New England region of New South Wales Australia. History The name is an Aboriginal word for "a high place", and was originally the name for a nearby farm operated by pastoralist John Brown in the 1840s. The land had previously been part of a grant to the Australian Agricultural Company in 1834 and had been used to graze 6,000 sheep. The village of Attunga was gazetted in 1847 but early settlement appears to have been slow. The first recorded burials at the Attunga Cemetery date from 1872 with the earliest inscriptions dated 1881. BHP opened a limestone quarry there in 1919. Population growth remained slow until the mid-twentieth century. The current population of 633 includes families of commuters to Tamworth. Services in Attunga currently include a primary school, supermarket, hotel and sports ground, and rural fire service headquarters. The area under administration is located adjacent to the New England Highway and the Main North railway line. Tamworth is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is represented by the Honourable Kevin Anderson MP of the National Party. In 2019 Anderson was sworn in as the Minister for Better Regulation & Innovation, with additional responsibility for Thoroughbred, Greyhound and Harness Racing codes in New South Wales. The Division of New England is an Australian electoral division in the state of New South Wales. History The division was proclaimed in 1900, and was one of the original 65 divisions to be contested at the first federal election. It is named after the New England region in northern New South Wales. From 1922 to 2001, New England was usually regarded as a comfortably safe seat for the National Party, formerly the Country Party. Only one Labor candidate has ever won the seat – Frank Foster at the 1906 election and again at the 1910 election, both times on small margins. Since then, the closest Labor has come to winning the seat was in the 1943 landslide, when the Country majority was pared back to an extremely marginal 1.1 percent. The Australian Agricultural Company (AACo) () is a public-listed Australian company that, as at 2018, owned and operated feedlots and farms covering around of land in Queensland and the Northern Territory, roughly one percent of Australia's land mass. As of July 2008 AACo had a staff of 500 and operated 24 cattle stations and two feedlots, consisting of over 565,000 beef cattle. Walter William Bygraves (16 October 1922 – 31 August 2012), best known by the stage name Max Bygraves (adopted in honour of Max Miller), was an English comedian, singer, actor and variety performer. He appeared on his own television shows, sometimes performing comedy sketches between songs. He made twenty '' Royal Variety Performance'' appearances and presented numerous programmes, including '' Family Fortunes'' between 1983 and 1985.
