The ''Artot–Alard Stradivarius'' of 1728 is an antique violin made by luthier Antonio Stradivari of Cremona (1644-1736). This violin is currently on display in the Stradivarius exhibition at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona until June 5, 2016. A luthier ( ; ) is a craftsperson who builds or repairs string instruments. Etymology The word ' is originally French and comes from ''luth'', the French word for "lute". Antonio Stradivari
Antonio Stradivari (, also , ; – 18 December 1737) was an Italian luthier and a craftsman of string instruments such as violins, cellos, guitars, violas and harps. The Latinisation of names, Latinized form of his surname, ''Stradivarius'', as well as the colloquial ''Strad'' are terms often used to refer to his instruments. It is estimated that Stradivari produced 1,116 instruments, of which 960 were violins. Around 650 instruments survive, including 450 to 512 violins. His instruments are considered some of the finest ever made, and are extremely valuable collector's items. Celli Antonio Stradivari built between 70 and 80 celli in his lifetime, of which 63 are extant.
