Angelique Kerber
Angelique Kerber (; born 18 January 1988) is a German former professional tennis player. She was ranked as the List of WTA number 1 ranked singles tennis players, world No. 1 in women's singles by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) for 34 weeks, including as the year-end No. 1 in 2016 WTA Tour, 2016. Kerber won 14 WTA Tour-level singles titles, including three Grand Slam (tennis)#Tournaments, majors at the 2016 Australian Open – Women's singles, 2016 Australian Open, the 2016 US Open – Women's singles, 2016 US Open, and the 2018 Wimbledon Championships – Women's singles, 2018 Wimbledon Championships. She also won a silver medal in women's singles at the Tennis at the 2016 Summer Olympics – Women's singles, 2016 Rio Olympics. 2016 Australian Open – Women's Singles
Angelique Kerber defeated defending champion Serena Williams in the final, 6–4, 3–6, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2016 Australian Open. It was her first major title. Kerber saved a match point en route to the title, in the first round against Misaki Doi; she was the first woman to win a singles major after saving a match point in the first round. She was also the first German to win a major since Steffi Graf at the 1999 French Open. Williams was attempting to equal Graf's Open Era record of 22 major singles titles. The 2020 Australian Open was a Grand Slam tennis tournament that took place at Melbourne Park, from 20 January to 2 February 2020. It was the 108th edition of the Australian Open, the 52nd in the Open Era, and the first Grand Slam of the year. The tournament consisted of events for professional players in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Junior and wheelchair players competed in singles and doubles tournaments. As in previous years, the tournament's main sponsor was Kia. Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka were the defending champions in Men's Singles and Women's Singles, respectively. The tennis tournament at the 2016 Summer Olympics was held at the Olympic Tennis Centre from 6 to 14 August. The competition was played on a fast hardcourt surface used in numerous North American tournaments that aims to minimize disruption for players. The Hopman Cup XXXI was the 31st edition of the Hopman Cup tournament between nations in men's and women's tennis and the final edition that took place at the Perth Arena in Perth, Western Australia.
