2020 Australian Open
The 2020 Australian Open was a Grand Slam tennis tournament that took place at Melbourne Park, from 20 January to 2 February 2020. It was the 108th edition of the Australian Open, the 52nd in the Open Era, and the first Grand Slam of the year. The tournament consisted of events for professional players in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Junior and wheelchair players competed in singles and doubles tournaments. As in previous years, the tournament's main sponsor was Kia. Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka were the defending champions in Men's Singles and Women's Singles, respectively. Osaka lost in the third round to Coco Gauff. In contrast, Djokovic successfully defended his title by defeating Dominic Thiem to win the tournament for a record-extending eighth time. Grand Slam (tennis)
The Grand Slam in tennis is the achievement of winning all four major championships in one discipline in a calendar year. In doubles, a Grand Slam may be achieved as a team or as an individual with different partners. Winning all four major championships consecutively but not within the same calendar year is referred to as a "non-calendar-year Grand Slam", while winning the four majors at any point during the course of a career is known as a "Career Grand Slam". Leandro Riedi (born 27 January 2002) is a Swiss professional tennis player. He has a career-high ATP singles ranking of world No. 117 achieved on 5 August 2024. He also has a career-high ATP doubles ranking of No. 211 achieved on 6 February 2023. Open Era
The racket sport traditionally named lawn tennis, invented in Edgbaston, Warwickshire, England, now commonly known simply as tennis, is the direct descendant of what is now denoted real tennis or royal tennis, which continues to be played today as a separate sport with more complex rules. Heath Davidson
Heath Arthur Davidson, (born 9 May 1987) is an Australian wheelchair tennis player. Davidson is a four-time Australian Open doubles champion, all partnering Dylan Alcott. He has also won two Paralympic medals, a gold and silver in doubles at the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, respectively (both also partnering Alcott). Jordanne Whiley
Jordanne Joyce Whiley MBE (born 11 June 1992) is a British retired wheelchair tennis player. Aged 14, she became Britain's youngest ever national women's singles champion in wheelchair tennis. She has osteogenesis imperfecta as does her father, Keith, who was also a Paralympian and won a bronze medal in 1984 in New York. As well as the 2015 US Open in wheelchair singles, Whiley has won 9 Grand Slam doubles titles, and she & Japanese Yui Kamiji are the fourth team in women's wheelchair doubles (as well as the most recent players) to complete the Calendar Year Grand Slam. Gordon James Reid (born 2 October 1991) is a British professional wheelchair tennis player. He has been ranked world No. 1 in singles and in doubles. Reid has won two Summer Paralympics, Paralympic gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze medal, as well as a two Grand Slam (tennis)#Tournaments, major singles titles and List of men's wheelchair tennis champions, a record 27 major doubles titles. Alfie Hewett
Alfie Hewett (born 6 December 1997 in Norwich, Norfolk) is a British professional wheelchair tennis player. He is the current world No. 2 in singles and world No. 1 in doubles. Hewett has won a total of 32 major titles: ten in singles and 22 in doubles, partnering Gordon Reid for all of the latter. Dylan Martin Alcott, (born 4 December 1990) is an Australian former wheelchair tennis player, former wheelchair basketball player, radio host, actor, foundation founder, business owner and motivational speaker. Alcott was a member of the Australia men's national wheelchair basketball team, known colloquially as the Australian "Rollers". At the age of 17, he became the youngest Rollers gold medal winner, at the 2008 Summer Paralympics, 2008 Beijing Paralympics, and was the youngest to compete in the Wheelchair basketball at the 2008 Summer Paralympics, wheelchair basketball competition. Yui Kamiji
is a Japanese professional wheelchair tennis player. She has won 32 major titles, as well as a Paralympic silver and bronze medal in singles and doubles, respectively, at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. She would later win gold in both at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. She also won a bronze medal in singles at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.
