Amerika, Saxony
Amerika () is a former company town, company settlement in the States of Germany, German state of Saxony and a district of the town of Penig. A small village of 79 residents (2010), it is known merely for its name, the German language, German word for United States, America, which was given to it in the 19th century. In 1836, a spinning factory was built on the left bank of the river Zwickauer Mulde, but houses for workers and clerks were not built until 1870. Initially, because a bridge was only built much later, workers and visitors coming from the right bank of the river had to cross the water using stepping stones or boats to access the place. As "crossing the pond" in those times was chiefly understood as emigrating to America, the factory was named "Amerika" by the local population. Company Town
A company town is a place where all or most of the stores and housing in the town are owned by the same company that is also the main employer. Company towns are often planned with a suite of amenities such as stores, houses of worship, schools, markets, and recreation facilities. Some company towns were established to improve living conditions for workers, but many have been regarded as controlling and/or exploitative. Zwickauer Mulde
The Zwickauer Mulde () is a river in Saxony, Germany. It is the left tributary of the Mulde and in length. The source of the river is in the Ore Mountains, near Schöneck, in the Vogtlandkreis. It runs northeast to Aue, then northwest to Zwickau (hence the name), and further north through Glauchau, Rochlitz and Colditz. A few kilometers north of Colditz, the Zwickauer Mulde is joined by the Freiberger Mulde to form the united Mulde. The Mulde is a tributary of the Elbe. America (Limburgish: ''Amerika,'' ) is a parish village in the Dutch province of Limburg, known historically for its peat extraction. Geography America is part of the municipality of Horst aan de Maas in Limburg, and lies approximately northwest of Venlo, east of Helmond, and west of the German border.
