Geography The commune of is made up of the following villages and hamlets, Saint-Hippolyte, Almenêches, Fligny, La Gare, Le Mesnil, Les Champs Bouchers, Le Friche, Surônes and Les Essarts. The Commune is one of 27 communes that make up the Natura 2000 protected area of Bocages et vergers du sud Pays d'Auge. Almenêches along with another 65 communes is also part of a 20,593 hectare, Natura 2000 conservation area, the Haute vallée de l'Orne et affluents. Le Château-d'Almenêches (; literally 'The Château of Almenêches') is a commune in the Orne department in north-western France. Geography The commune of is made up of the following villages and hamlets, Les Planches, Ménil Gautier, Le Parc, La Chaise, Le Grand Chemin, La Huetterie, Maroger, L'Oliverie and Château-d'Almenêches. Le Château-d'Almenêches along with another 65 communes is part of a 20,593 hectare, Natura 2000 conservation area, called the Haute vallée de l'Orne et affluents. Almenêches Abbey
Almenêches Abbey () was a Benedictine nunnery at Almenêches in Orne, Normandy, France. It was founded in the 6th century, but had been abandoned by the 10th century. Roger of Montgomery refounded it sometime between 1063 and 1066. History During the Anglo-Norman civil war, upon hearing the abbey was being used by Duke Robert Curthose as a stable, Robert of Bellême burned it down. The abbess, Bellême's sister Emma, fled with her sister nuns; they were temporarily accommodated in surrounding houses or at the Abbey of Saint-Evroul. The following year Emma had the abbey at Almenêches rebuilt. It subsequently suffered another fire under Abbess Matilda, Emma's successor, and a third one after 1308. Episcopal visit In 1260, Archbishop Eudes Rigaud noted the refectory was not in use; the nuns ate in groups of twos and threes in private rooms. Louis-Guillaume Perreaux
Louis-Guillaume Perreaux (19 February 1816 – 5 April 1889) was a French inventor and engineer who submitted one of the first patents for a working motorcycle in 1869. Early life Perreaux was born in the village of Almenêches, in Normandy, France, on 19 February 1816. After attending elementary school in Almenêches he showed an early interest in engineering, inventing a cane gun (a type of walking stick with a gun concealed inside) at the age of 12. Perreaux was then sent to the Minor Seminary of Sees where he formed the ideas that were later published in his first book in 1877, the two-volume ''Lois de l'univers principe de la création'' (''Laws of the Universe''), which is now in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. He secured a scholarship to the School of Arts and Crafts at Châlons-sur-Marne in 1836.
