There are 69 towns in Slovenia. According to the Local Self-Government Act of the Slovenia, Republic of Slovenia, a town is a larger urban area, urban settlement with more than 3,000 residents and differing from other settlements in its size, economical structure, population, population density and historical development. A settlement acquires the status of town through a decision by the Government of Slovenia. Until 2005, the decision was made by the National Assembly of Slovenia. Gradišče (; in older sources also ''Gradiše'', ) is a formerly independent settlement in the Municipality of Ajdovščina in southwestern Slovenia. It is now part of the town of Ajdovščina. It is part of the traditional region of the Littoral and is now included with the rest of the municipality in the Gorizia Statistical Region. Geography Gradišče lies northwest of Ajdovščina, on the southwest slope of Gradišče Commons Hill (, elevation: ). Name Gradišče is known locally as ''Gradiše''. Karst Plateau
The Karst Plateau or the Karst region (, ), also locally called Karst, is a karst plateau region extending across the border of southwestern Slovenia and northeastern Italy. It lies between the Vipava Valley, the low hills surrounding the valley, the westernmost part of the Brkini Hills, northern Istria, and the Gulf of Trieste. The western edge of the plateau also marks the traditional ethnic border between Italians and Slovenes. The region gave its name to karst topography. The bora is a northerly to north-easterly katabatic wind in areas near the Adriatic Sea. Similar nomenclature is used for north-eastern winds in other littoral areas of eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea basins. Castra Ad Fluvium Frigidum
(Latin for 'Fortress by the Cold River'), also simply (), referred to as (Castra relay station) in , was a Late-Roman fortress ('' castrum'') which constituted the centre of '' Claustra Alpium Iuliarum'', an Ancient Roman defensive system of walls and towers stretching from the Gail Valley (now Carinthia, Austria) to the Učka mountain range (now Croatia). On its grounds, the Late Medieval market settlement of Ajdovščina developed. The fortress was built on the grounds of an Early Roman settlement next to the confluence of the Hubelj River and Lokavšček Creek in the Vipava Valley (now in southwestern Slovenia), along the road Via Gemina from Aquileia to Emona, in the early 270s.
