Adela Świątek
Adela Świątek (2 September 1945 – 27 September 2019) was a Polish mathematician and teacher at the Nicolaus Copernicus University Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, and a popularizer of mathematics. Biography Adela Świątek was born on 2 September 1945 in Człuchów, Poland. She graduated in mathematics from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in 1968 and since then, she was professionally associated with the University's Institute of Mathematics. In 1975, she defended her doctoral thesis entitled: ''Category of cube objects'', supervised by Professor Stanisław Balcerzyk. In the years 1996–2001 she headed the postgraduate study ''Mathematics Teachers''. In her professional work, she dealt with issues related to teaching mathematics and the education of students specializing in teaching. Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń or NCU (, UMK) is located in Toruń, Poland. It is named after Nicolaus Copernicus, who was born in Toruń in 1473. History The beginnings of higher education in Toruń The first institution of higher education in Toruń, the Toruń Academic Gymnasium was founded in 1568. It was one of the first universities in northern Poland. The Academic Gymnasium was the precursor to scientific and cultural life (including the first museum, created in 1594) in the region. Człuchów
Człuchów (, ''Człochòwo'', or ''Człëchòwò''; ) is a town in the region of Gdańsk Pomerania, northern Poland, with 13,350 inhabitants as of December 2021. Mathematical Kangaroo (also known as Kangaroo challenge; ) is an international mathematics competition in over 89 countries. There are six levels of participation, ranging from grade 1 to grade 12. The competition is held annually on the third Thursday of March. The challenge consists of problems in multiple-choice form that are not standard notebook problems and come from a variety of topics. Besides basic computational skills, they require inspiring ideas, perseverance, creativity and imagination, logical thinking, and other problem-solving strategies. Mathematical Olympiad Program
The Mathematical Olympiad Program (abbreviated MOP; formerly called the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program, abbreviated MOSP) is an intensive summer program sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America. The main purpose of MOP, held since 1974, is to select and train the six members of the U.S. team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Selection Process Students qualify for the program by scoring highly on the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) or United States of America Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAJMO). Before 2012, the top twelve American scorers from all grades formed the "black" group.
