Interpretation Act (with its variations) is a stock short title used for legislation in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, Singapore and the United Kingdom relating to interpretation of legislation. The Bill for an Act with this short title will have been known as the Interpretation Bill during its passage through Parliament. Interpretation Act 1889
The Interpretation Act 1889 ( 52 & 53 Vict. c. 63) was an act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that consolidated enactments relating to statutory construction and provided definitions to shorten the language used in acts of Parliament. In Northern IrelandSection 48(2)of the Interpretation Act (Northern Ireland) 1954 provided that without prejudice to 48(1) of that act, the Interpretation Act 1889 was to cease to apply to the interpretation of enactments. The whole Act, except paragraphs (4), (5) and (14) of section 13 in their application to Northern Ireland, was repealed by section 25(1) of, and Schedule 3 to, the Interpretation Act 1978. In the Republic of Ireland, the application of the Interpretation Act 1889 was restricted to pre-1924 legislation by the Interpretation Act 1923, and repealed by the Interpretation Act 2005. Susan Crennan
Susan Maree Crennan (née Walsh; born 1945) is a former Justice of the High Court of Australia, the highest court in the Australian court hierarchy. Early life and education Susan Maree Crennan was born in 1945 in Melbourne, one of six children born to World War 2 veteran, John Maurice Walsh, and Marie Therese (née Henley), Catholics of Irish descent. She attended Our Lady of Mercy College, Heidelberg and the University of Melbourne, where she received a Bachelor of Arts. She later received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Sydney. Crennan also completed a Postgraduate Diploma (History) at the University of Melbourne on the constitutional history of the state of Victoria. Career Crennan was a teacher of English literature and was employed by various patent attorneys in New South Wales and Victoria between 1967–1978. ''Bropho v Western Australia'' was a decision of the High Court of Australia, which ruled on 20 June 1990 that Section 17 of the ''Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972'' of Western Australia bound the Crown in right of Western Australia.
