Interpretation Act
Interpretation Act (with its variations) is a stock short title used for legislation in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, Singapore and the United Kingdom relating to interpretation of legislation. The Bill for an Act with this short title will have been known as the Interpretation Bill during its passage through Parliament. Interpretation Acts may be a generic name either for legislation bearing that short title or for all legislation which relates to interpretation. Short Title
In certain jurisdictions, including the United Kingdom and other Westminster system, Westminster-influenced jurisdictions (such as Canada or Australia), as well as the United States and the Philippines, primary legislation has both a short title and a long title. The long title (properly, the title in some jurisdictions) is the formal title appearing at the head of a statute (such as an act of Parliament or of act of Congress, Congress) or other legislative instrument. The long title is intended to provide a summarised description of the purpose or scope of the instrument. Like other descriptive components of an act (such as the preamble, section headings, side notes, and short title), the long title seldom affects the operative provisions of an act, except where the operative provisions are unclear or ambiguous and the long title provides a clear statement of the legislature's intention. Interpretation Measure 1925
The Interpretation Measure 1925, No. 1 (Regnal. 15 and 16 Geo 5) is a Church of England measure passed by the General Synod of the Church of England legislating how to interpret future Church of England measures - later it would also cover Church of England instruments. The long title of states that it provides for the "construction of the Constitution of the National Assembly of the Church of England referred to in the Church of England Assembly (Powers) Act 1919". The Interpretation Measure 1925 is listed in 'The Interpretation of Statutes'. The Measure also provides some the definitions in the amendment to the Treasure Act 1996 under The Treasure (Designation) (Amendment) Order 2023. Interpretation Act (Northern Ireland) 1954
The Interpretation Act (Northern Ireland) 1954 (c. 33 (N.I.)) is an act of the Parliament of Northern Ireland. The Act makes provision for the interpretation of Acts of the Parliament of Northern Ireland. The Act is known as a "Interpretation Act". The Interpretation Act (Northern Ireland) 1954 binds the Crown. Originally the Act did not apply to delegated legislation, but this was changed by the Statutory Rules Act (Northern Ireland) 1958, which amended the Act to apply to all secondary legislation. The Interpretation and Legislative Reform (Scotland) Act 2010 (asp 10) is an Act of the Scottish Parliament that was given royal assent on 29 April 2015; it came into force in April 2016. Lord Brougham's Act
The Interpretation Act 1850 ( 13 & 14 Vict. c. 21), also known as Lord Brougham's Act, was an act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that simplified the language that was used in statutes. The act devised the current system of dividing legislation into sections which are automatically substantive enactments, and also made various other provisions for interpreting other statutes. The Interpretation Act 1978 (c. 30) is an act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The act makes provision for the interpretation of acts of Parliament, Measures of the General Synod of the Church of England, Measures of the Church Assembly, subordinate legislation, "deeds and other instruments and documents", acts of the Scottish Parliament and instruments made thereunder (added 1998), and Measures and acts of the National Assembly for Wales and instruments made thereunder. Interpretation Act 1889
The Interpretation Act 1889 ( 52 & 53 Vict. c. 63) was an act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that consolidated enactments relating to statutory construction and provided definitions to shorten the language used in acts of Parliament. In Northern IrelandSection 48(2)of the Interpretation Act (Northern Ireland) 1954 provided that without prejudice to 48(1) of that act, the Interpretation Act 1889 was to cease to apply to the interpretation of enactments.
